Milo’s POV

Jace grips the back of my neck with one hand while bracing himself with the other against the seat beside me. I know he’s trying to steady me, to anchor me. We are so deeply connected that I’m certain he can feel my panic surging. For the past hour, we race across the water, scanning desperately for any trace of Rowan’s boat. Each of us watches a different direction, creating a full circle of surveillance. The two bodyguards shout out whenever they notice anything that might be a lead. Every call–out sends us veering to investigate.
“We’ll find the boat, babe. I know we will,” Jace shouts over the roar of the engine.
“There!” Roman yells. I follow his pointing finger and push the throttle, steering us toward a blocky shadow on the horizon. With every second closer, my pulse quickens. It is a boat. I circle it widely, keeping distance as we assess the scene. Rowan stands on deck, frantically waving his arms at us. Something about his expression unsettles me. He has to know he’s done for.
I bring our boat alongside, and Jage launches himself toward Rowan with his fist already cocked. Leo takes over the controls, and I jump across after Jace. Jace grips Rowan by the front of his shirt and

“Where is she? Where is our woman?” Jace shouts.
I notice an open hatch and head straight for it. I descend quickly, sprint through the cramped cabin toward the stern, burst through a door, and drop to my knees in a tiny room. It’s empty. I stand immediately and rush back toward the deck.
Jace is bent over, gasping for air, his chest heaving. Rowan lies on the floor, groaning.
I storm over, grab Rowan by the hair, and yank his head back. My fist connects hard with his jaw.
“What did you do with her!” I bellow.
He collapses backward.
“Jumped,” he mutters. “Water, can’t find her,” he wheezes.
“She jumped into the water?”
“Yes,” he answers.
Jace and I spin, scanning the water in frantic panic.
Oh God. My beautiful angel jumped into the ocean. The water isn’t icy, but exposure can still drain her

“Call the police and give them our coordinates. I’m taking the boat and searching the water,” I tell Leo.
Jace insists on coming with me. Roman and Leo stay behind to deal with Rowan.
I tear off across the water again. Another hour passes as we search relentlessly. Jace suddenly shouts when he spots something bobbing on the surface. As we draw closer, our faces drain of color
-it’s a small shoe, one that looks just like Scar’s.
“No, no, no, this can’t be real. We just got her back. Milo, tell me this isn’t happening,” Jace sobs. I pull him into my arms, holding him tightly as we cling to each other. My body shakes uncontrollably, and I feel his trembling too. We can’t have lost her. Please, God, don’t let this be real.
I release Jace, and he sinks to the deck, sitting hard while clutching the shoe as if it’s the only thing keeping him upright. I return to the helm and steer in a new direction, moving slowly and carefully. I
don’t want to overlook anything.
“Jace, she isn’t gone. We would feel it, wouldn’t we? She’s everything to us. We’d know,” I say, my
voice thick with desperation.
A sob escapes him, and it nearly breaks me. Tears sting my eyes, but I can’t fall apart. I have to be
strong–for both of us.
I turn the boat and continue for another half hour, heading closer to land. Maybe, somehow, she
makes it back to shore. With every mile closer, my hope fades. We’re still about ten miles out when a ringing phone jolts us both. Jace scrambles for it and answers.
“Hello?”
“Scar! Scar, baby–oh God–how, where are you? Yes, yes, he’s right here with me. We’re looking for you. What? Yes, we know, he’s being handled. Okay, baby, we’re coming. I love you, I love you so
much. Yes, stay there,” he says, smiling through streaming tears as he holds the phone out to me.
“Hey, beautiful,” I choke out. “Shh, baby, don’t cry. I know, I love you too. Yes, we’re on our way. Okay,
baby. I love you–see you soon.”
I end the call. Jace slams into me, wrapping me up as we both break down, crying from relief and
overwhelming joy.
“She’s safe. She’s safe. The Coast Guard found her–get us back to shore, fast,” Jace says.
I dip my head once and slam the throttle forward. The engine roars as the boat surges ahead, and we
speed straight back toward the marina. I guide the boat into its spot and secure it. Jace and I leap off
at the same time. We immediately run into the police–Roman and Leo are there.
