Sloane’s POV
I keep Brennan’s hand clasped in mine while he remains unconscious. The doctor explains that the blow to the side of his head is serious and will almost certainly result in a severe concussion. Thankfully, there is no fracture to his skull.
I study his face, struck again by how attractive he is. Dark bruising is already blooming around his left temple and eye. The swelling on that side of his head is massive, yet it still fails to take away from his
looks.
I rise to stretch my stiff back and step out of his room to grab a cup of coffee. A burst of commotion unfolds a few rooms away. I pause to watch a nurse speaking with a doctor just outside another
room.
“Her name is Scarlett Joseph. According to the report, she was abducted and taken out on the water. She escaped by jumping from her captors‘ boat and swimming through the ocean until she reached a weather buoy. The Coast Guard recovered her. She was exposed to harsh conditions for several hours and nearly went into hypothermia. We’re
warming her now. She’s alert and responsive. She claims the man who took her used chloroform, and she keeps asking for her boyfriends,” the nurse explains while
the doctor scans a chart.
“Boyfriends? As in more than one?” the doctor asks.
“That’s exactly what she said.”
He gives a brief nod and enters the room.
How the hell is Scar here in this hospital at the same time as us? And she was kidnapped?
I drift a little closer as the nurse follows him inside. I peer through the window, and there she is–Scar. Her hair is tangled, her complexion washed out, but I don’t notice any visible injuries. The doctor speaks to her, and I can see her mouth forming words. She looks worn down and drained. Despite myself, I feel a flicker of sympathy seeing her alone. Where are these boyfriends she keeps asking for?
When the doctor and nurse turn toward the door, I quickly move away. I keep my back to them,
listening as they talk.
“She’s incredibly brave. Detectives will probably arrive shortly. Get her a phone so she can contact her guys. That’s certainly an unusual situation. I’m going to check on my blunt force trauma patient, then I’m taking my break.”
I wait until the doctor passes me and heads into Brennan’s room. I follow him in, and he turns around.
I catch his eyes sweeping over my body before he smiles.

“Hello, Sloane. Your brother still hasn’t regained consciousness. At this point, I’m not overly
concerned. His body needs rest, and since he’s breathing independently, I’m confident he’ll wake up
soon.”
“Thank you, doctor. My brother is everything to me. I’m thankful he’s under the care of someone as
intelligent and capable as you,” I say softly. I had no choice but to claim Brennan as my brother–I
know they never would have allowed me to stay if I admitted I was only his girlfriend.
Color creeps into his cheeks. He’s not unattractive, and the fact that he’s a doctor doesn’t hurt. I
glance at his left hand and note the absence of a wedding ring. My gaze shifts back to Brennan. If things don’t work out with him, maybe I can make other arrangements.
“Well, I’ll leave you alone with your brother.”
I smile and can’t stop myself from admiring his backside in his slacks as he walks away. He glances
back and catches me looking. When I smile again, he blushes even harder. I laugh quietly as he exits.
“What are you doing here, Sloane?”
I spin around.
“Brennan! Oh–oh my God, I should get the doctor. He just stepped out.”
“No. Tell me why you’re here.”
“Well, the short version is that I followed you from Montana and have been keeping an eye on you ever
since.”
“You’re fucking stalking me?”
“It’s no different from you stalking Scar.”
“That’s not the same. She’s my wife.”
“Ex–wife, Brennan. Why won’t you let her go and choose me instead?”
“Because I love her, and I don’t love you.”
“You could learn to love me. We work well together.”
“No, I can’t. All I see when I look at you is the woman who wrecked my home and destroyed my life. I
can’t see you as anything else. I ruined everything because of you.”
“I didn’t force you to spend all your time with me, Brennan.”
“No, you didn’t. You’re right. That was my own twisted idea of being a savior–wanting to protect you and Ever, to help however I could. But you tempted me at every turn, and I had a moment of weakness.

Then you took advantage of me when I was drunk. I can’t be with you. I feel nothing for you. All I want
is to hurt you, and if you don’t get the fuck out of my room right now, I’m calling someone to have you
removed.”
