He locks his eyes on mine and presses the button on the side of his bed. Two minutes later, a nurse
enters the room.
“You’re awake–that’s great news. There are two police officers here who’d like to speak with you,” she
says.
“That’s fine. I’ll talk to them. Get her out of here,” he tells her
She looks at me, one eyebrow lifting.
“Your sister has been sitting with you this entire time.”
“My sister? Absolutely not. She’s a deranged stalker who helped me destroy my marriage. She’s the homewrecker who followed me from my hometown all the way here!” he shouts.
I hear someone clear their throa
dme. The doctor is standing
there with two police officers b Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! The doctor’s stare is cold and contemptuous, like I am filth stuck to the sole of his shoe. One of the officers looks me up and down with an ugly smirk, while the other keeps his expression completely empty.
“You are not Mr. Graysen’s sister, are you?” the doctor asks.
Before I can even open my mouth, Brennan snaps, “No, she isn’t!”
A nurse escorts me out of his hospital room. I stop in the center of the hallway, seething with rage. This cannot be real. I give up my daughter for this asshole. All he gives a damn about is fucking Scarlett. Fury drives me as I stomp down the corridor toward her room. I am just about to storm inside when I freeze at what I see. Two men are wrapped around her, touching her, clinging to her. All of them are crying. I watch them kissing her over and over, and she is smiling brightly. She looks deeply in love, and they look just as devoted. This is not her fault. She has moved on with her life. Brennan is the one who refuses to let go. I bet everything on the wrong man. I need to leave and go home and reclaim my daughter. I have to let go and move forward. I will get my Ever back, and then I will take us far away
from here so we can start over somewhere new.
‘It takes five long days for me to make it back to Montana. I go straight to the hospital to gather any
information I can about my daughter. I am instructed to sit in the waiting area and told that someone will come speak with me shortly.
My thoughts spiral uncontrollably when two uniformed officers approach me.

“Ma’am, you are under arrest for child abandonment,” one of them says as he grabs my arm, turns me around, snaps handcuffs onto my wrists, and begins reciting my Miranda Rights.
I squawk in outrage as they drag me out of the waiting room. I shout at them to stop, to listen to me, to let me go so I can find Ever. They do not respond. They simply escort me out of the hospital and force me into the back of a police car. This is wrong. They have no right to do this to me.
“I only made a brief mistake in judgment!” I scream, but they ignore me completely. Tears spill as the car pulls away. I am completely screwed. This is not how any of this is supposed to happen. I cry uncontrollably, overwhelmed by the unfairness of life.
A public defender is assigned to me because no private attorney will take my case. One lawyer after another listens briefly before laughing and telling me I am beyond help. A month later, I stand before a judge. My attorney assures me that I will receive a fine and probation. That assurance proves false. The judge seems to harbor a personal vendetta against me.
He launches into a furious lecture about how a mother should treasure her child and never abandon
them for selfish reasons. He says it might have been understandable if I were mentally unfit to care for my daughter, but since I abandoned her for dick–my phrasing, not his–I am nothing more than a disgraceful excuse for a mother.
He sentences me to five years in prison and orders me to pay a ten–thousand–dollar fine. I shoot my lawyer a furious glare. He shrugs and tells me, “You shouldn’t have left her with strangers.” Apparently, the judge adds child endangerment to the charges because I did exactly that. I curse the day I ever
move next door to Brennan Graysen.
