Everyone watches silently as Sloane is escorted out of my hospital room.

“Mr. Graysen, I am pleased to see that you are conscious. My name is Dr. Baker,” the doctor says as he shines a penlight into my eyes. It hurts like hell. “You are suffering from a mild concussion and a significant bump to the head. I want to keep you here overnight, and if no complications arise, you will

be discharged tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I reply.

He gives a brief nod and exits the room. I shift my attention to the two men who remain.

“Mr. Graysen, I am Officer Bowman, and this is Officer Cooper,” one of them says. “We are here to take your statement and ask you some questions. We believe your assault is connected to another

incident.”

“What other incident are you referring to?” I ask.

“I’ll explain that shortly. First, can you tell me what you remember? Do you recognize the person who

“Yes, I was-” Shit. I can’t admit that I have been stalking my ex–wife! “I was resting against a tree. I

recently moved here and have been walking around to familiarize myself with the area. Just getting to know my surroundings.”

The officer nods while writing in his notebook.

“I have met a few people in town since arriving. One of them is a man named Rowan Vance. He is, or

was, a firefighter with the Hollywood fire department. A couple of weeks ago, I had a few drinks with

him. While I was leaning against the tree, I heard someone approach from behind. I turned and saw

him. He lifted a black object and struck me on the side of the head. That is the last thing I remember

before waking up.”

Officer Bowman nods, while his partner continues staring at me. His silence makes me uneasy.

“That aligns with our evidence,” Bowman says. “Surveillance footage shows you across the street and captures Mr. Vance knocking you unconscious. Mr. Vance appears to have developed a serious fixation on the fire department’s chef. He abducted her.”

“Is Scar alright?” I ask, panic gripping me.

“How exactly do you know Miss Joseph?” the second officer asks. I believe his name is Cooper.

I sigh heavily. “Alright. I moved here because I wanted to try to win her back. I only wanted to see her. I have missed her more than I can explain.”

“So you were following her around?” Officer Cooper asks.

“What? No, absolutely not!”

“I have trouble buying that. Your photograph is posted on a wall at the station. One of the firefighters informed us that you’d been harassing Miss Joseph.”

“Then why bother questioning me if you already had your answer?”

“We wanted to see whether you would be honest with us. Regrettably, all we can do is advise you that staying away from her would be wise. From a legal standpoint, you haven’t committed a crime. Don’t give us a reason to return. Thank you for cooperating.”

They both walk out, and anger churns inside me. Scar was taken? Was she safe? I need answers. Those bastards said nothing useful. I swear under my breath. I have no idea how to find out what happened to her.

A nurse enters through the door, and I hear someone yelling nearby.

“Scar wants a hot chocolate–bring her two.”

Is she here?

“Hello, Mr. Graysen. How are you feeling today?”

“Is Scarlett Joseph a patient here?”

“I’m not permitted to share information about other patients, Mr. Graysen.”

Which tells me everything–I know she’s here.

“I feel a bit stiff. Am I allowed to get up? Maybe walk around?”

“Yes, provided you’re not dizzy. Moving will actually help. Just watch your I.V. bag, don’t move too quickly, and if you feel lightheaded, alert someone immediately.”

This woman isn’t exactly sharp. She helps me stand. I give her a reassuring smile to show I’m fine. She exits the room, and I slowly head to the bathroom. I take care of my business. After washing my hands, I rake my fingers through my hair, trying to look somewhat presentable. I’m thankful I’m wearing hospital pants beneath the gown.

Carefully, I step out into the hallway. I move down the corridor, peering through the windows in the doors as I pass. Five doors down from mine, I look inside and see my beautiful wife. She appears calm and peaceful. I wonder what brought her here. Clearly, she’s been rescued. No one else is in the room. I push the door open.

Her eyes snap open, widening instantly.

“Please don’t scream. Scar–oh God. Why are you in the hospital? What happened to you, baby?”

“You need to leave,” she says flatly. She’s clearly unhappy to see me.
