Chapter 156 Move on
Brennan’s POV

“Scar,” I begin, but the bathroom door opens. A large man steps out–tattoos covering his arms, green eyes, black hair, and a grin on his face. That smile disappears the moment he sees me. The expression he wears makes the blood in my veins run cold. This is not someone I want to cross. The other times I’ve seen him, he’s been all affection and sweetness with Scar–or with the other man she’s involved with.
“Get the fuck out of here before I kill you,” he growls.
“Jace, my love. Please, come here.”
Hearing her call him that shatters something inside me. I watch him approach her. She raises her hand, and he takes it immediately. He sits beside her and presses a kiss to her knuckles.
“Brennan, I love this man. He–and my other lover, Milo–are the loves of my life. I’ve never experienced anything like what I feel with them. They are the air I breathe. They showed me what it truly means to be loved completely by a man.”
Tears stream down my face. With every word she speaks, the emptiness in my chest grows larger.
“What I felt with you doesn’t even come close to what I feel for them. You were merely a stepping stone toward the love I deserve. You taught me what never to accept. The only thing I’m thankful to you for is cheating on me–because it allowed me to divorce you and find the love I’ll have for the rest of my life.”
I’m a sobbing wreck as I slowly turn toward the door. It opens before I reach it. The other man in her life enters, carrying a tray of drinks. When he sees me, his glare could kill. He slams into me with his shoulder as he passes, completely unconcerned that I’m a hospital patient. I stagger but catch myself before falling.
I glance back. Jace is kissing her gently. The other man sets the drinks down, bends over, and kisses her–then kisses him. After that, he turns to me, rolling his head from side to side as he cracks his neck.
“Get the fuck out,” he says.
I don’t argue. I turn and walk away, my heart hemorrhaging. It’s time to let her go.
“Brennan,” a voice I dread hearing calls my name.
I lift my gaze from the floor. Romero Joseph stands in front of me.

“Mr. Joseph,” I choke out.

“If I were you, I’d vanish,” he says. “You have one week. After that, Hale and I will hunt you for a month. If we fail to find you, I’ll leave you alone for the rest of your life–as long as you stay away from
Scarlett. If we do find you, I’ll send your ashes to your mother, along with a generous check to
compensate her for raising such a piece of shit.”
I swallow hard. I know he means every word–I see it burning in his eyes.
“Yes, sir,” I whisper.
The following morning, I am released. I call an Uber and return to my weekly place. I pack my things
and officially check out. From there, I drive back to Montana. I stop to see my mom, collect all of my
essential documents, tell her how much I love her, then climb into my truck with the intention of
vanishing.
About a month later, I am sitting in my cabin deep in the Canadian wilderness, watching the news,
when a story airs about a woman who abandoned her child. She receives the harshest prison
sentence possible along with a fine of ten thousand dollars. Her photograph appears on the screen, and I nearly choke on my coffee. Poly shit. My thoughts immediately turn to Ever. I hope that little girl
is being cared for properly. She is the true victim in all of this.
That night, while lying in bed, I reflect on my life and everything that has happened over the last three years. I completely screwed my life up. I had the best wife anyone could ever want, and I lost her. I once had an excellent job, and now I have nothing at all. I survive on the money from selling my house.
That money is enough to keep me going for a bit longer. Life in the cabin doesn’t require much. I am fully stocked with supplies for six months.
The next morning, I wake up and freeze when I notice a sheet of paper pinned to my door by a knife.
“We located you a week ago. My daughter persuaded us that you didn’t deserve to die simply because
you betrayed her. But understand this–we are watching you. If you ever choose to remarry, we will
ensure your fiancée knows exactly what kind of cheater you are. If she still decides to marry you, we will be observing closely to make sure you don’t screw it up. If you do, you will cease to exist, and I will
personally guarantee your new wife enjoys a generous life insurance payout. Stay on the correct path.”
I curse under my breath, my heart racing as I scan the snow–covered yard. There are no footprints anywhere. I already know how terrifying Scarlett’s father is. In that moment, I swear to myself that I will never mess up again.
