“Papa!” I cry through sobs as my father steps into my hospital room only minutes after Brennan leaves, hopefully for the last time.

“My Scar. How are you doing?” he asks as he approaches my bed. Milo shifts aside, allowing him space to climb in and hold me.

“I’m doing well. They’ve warmed me up. I’ve had some rest. But why are you here? You have that very

important Christmas party tonight.”

“What do you mean, why am I here? My only daughter is kidnapped. Those two bodyguards are going to pay. And the flight isn’t long–I’ll still make it there tonight.”

“No, Daddy. They helped Milo a Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! Idn’t control the way the

distractions unfolded. They’re only human.”

“You are far too forgiving, Scarlett. You should have been their sole focus. They will never work for me

again–they’ve lost my trust. And I see Brennan somehow manages to show up here?”

“He follows her from Montana on her last trip. He’s been stalking her ever since,” Milo blurts out.

“Milo!” I snap.

My father’s eyes darken dangerously. “I am absolutely going to kill him.”

“Daddy, leave him alone. I want nothing to do with him ever again, and I’m pretty sure today made that clear. You can’t hurt him over something as minor as stalking. He didn’t actually do anything. And honestly, if he never cheated on me, I would never have met the loves of my life here. So in a way, I

owe him.”

“You owe him nothing. I will spare his life only because of you, but I will make sure he never screws up again. Now, let’s discuss the man who kidnapped you. Who is he?”

“No, Dad!”

“His name is Rowan Vance. He is arrested at the marina,” Jace says.

“Ugh, can you all stop feeding my dad information? Rowan will get what’s coming to him. He’s going to prison.”

“I’ll personally see to that,” Romero says.

“Well, on a happier note–Merry Christmas. Please give Mama and Hale a hug and a kiss for me.”

My father stays for a couple more hours. He speaks privately in the hallway with Milo and Jace, and I know they’re filling him in on every detail of what happened.

A detective and a uniformed officer come in to speak with me about the incident. I give them my version of events, and Milo and Jace provide theirs. Once they leave, I release a heavy sigh. I feel immense relief knowing this part is over. I understand a trial still lies ahead, but for now, I’m done thinking about it.

In the morning, Milo drives us home. The Chief drops off all the gifts we left at the station, along with

our Secret Santa presents from our coworkers. The Chief draws my name and buys me a food

dehydrator. I am beyond excited. Milo stares at me in disbelief over how thrilled I am.

“Most women want jewelry or a handbag, babe.”

“Well, I’m not most women. I want what I want.

He laughs. Brenna draws his name and gets him a year–long snack box subscription. He’s extremely pleased with that. Magnus gets Jace and buys him a Dolphins jacket.

New Year’s Eve keeps me running nonstop. I spend the day out shopping, searching for the perfect dress for myself and a birthday present for Jace. I already know exactly what gift I want to buy for him,

so that part is easy. I reach out to Maisie to ask whether we can host a combined New Year’s Eve and

birthday celebration for Jace aboard her parents‘ yacht, and she immediately loves the idea. She

happily handles all the décor, while I take responsibility for the food, beverages, and the cake.

I send invitations to all of our friends, the guys from the station, and Jace’s mom and sisters. Maisie

also invites a few of her own friends so the girl–to–guy balance feels more even. I feel a little

disappointed knowing Natalie and her men won’t be attending. I still haven’t received any messages from either her or Dylan. I’m aware there’s a massive snowstorm hitting Maine right now, so I figure their phone service might be down. I truly hope she isn’t upset with me for telling Dylan where she was. I also hope Dylan and his brothers manage to convince her that she’s the one they all want. She deserves a loving relationship like mine, especially after being hurt so deeply in the past.

I get dressed in one of the yacht’s rooms. My hair is piled high on my head, a wild cascade of curls creating a dramatic look. I’m wearing a slinky silver dress that clings to my curves and reveals plenty of leg, paired with silver heels strapped delicately around my ankles. My makeup is bold and

shimmering, with glittery silver eyeshadow and a striking red lip. Black liner frames my eyes in a sharp cat–eye style. Altogether, I look incredibly festive.

I move through the yacht, checking on everything to make sure the evening is running smoothly. The party is already lively and energetic. I make certain everyone has a drink in hand. My guys are pleasantly tipsy, and watching them laugh and joke with their friends makes me happy. Their mood is upbeat and playful, and they’re clearly having an amazing time.

“Alright everyone! One minute until the countdown!” I shout. Cheers and excited yells erupt all around us. One of Maisie’s model friends attempts to slide in close to Milo, but I stop her by putting my hand up between them. She can clearly see that I’m positioned right in the middle, with both of them wrapped around me and each other. She scoffs in irritation and walks off to hunt down another guy

for her midnight kiss.

As the countdown begins, everyone shouts the numbers together. I feel lightheaded with excitement. I’m about to welcome the New Year surrounded by the people I love most, and with the new adventure we’ve planned–a trip to Spain scheduled for next week.

When the countdown reaches one and everyone screams “Happy New Year,” fireworks burst into the sky from a nearby boat. Jace and Milo kiss each other first, and I can’t help but enjoy watching them as their tongues intertwine. Milo then leans in to kiss me while Jace trails kisses and gentle nips along my neck. I turn fully toward Jace, and the two of us share a deep, lingering kiss.

While Jace and I are still kissing, Maisie signals three waiters to bring out the three–tier chocolate cake I’ve made for Jace’s birthday. Each tier contains a different filling: one is layered with strawberry and cream, another with peanut butter, and the last with caramel and pecans. Pecans are Jace’s favorite.

A large, lit candle shaped like the number thirty–one sits on top of the cake, along with “Happy Birthday, Jace” written in white and copper frosting. It takes me a while to perfect the copper shade,

but it’s worth the effort.

“Make a wish, baby,” I tell him, unable to hide the wide smile on my face. Milo stands close behind me,

and I can feel the warmth of his body.

Once everyone finishes singing happy birthday, Jace closes his eyes and blows out the candle.

I kiss him softly and ask, “What did you wish for?” while he keeps his arms wrapped around me.

“For you to say yes,” he replies, holding my gaze.

I frown slightly in confusion just before he gently turns me away from him.

Milo is kneeling on one knee in front of me, holding an exquisite emerald–and–diamond ring. My eyes go wide as I lift my hands to cover my mouth. My heart begins racing, and I feel Jace’s arms slide

around me from behind.

Happiness explodes inside me. I nod repeatedly because the words won’t come out fast enough. Then

Milo jumps to his feet and pulls me out of Jace’s arms, crashing his lips against mine in a fierce kiss. Jace immediately takes me back, kissing me again before turning me so Milo can slide the ring onto

my finger. Applause and cheers erupt all around us.

Maisie, Summer, Joe, Junia, and Maren squeal as they rush over to hug me and admire the ring. I look between Jace and Milo as Daxter and Gavin congratulate them. This is the happiest day of my life,

and it’s the perfect way to begin the New Year.
