I called his name. He snapped his head around, smiled, said something to her, and they came toward

“Hey, Scar. Hey, Natalie.” He kissed my cheek, then Natalie’s. “I want you two to meet someone important. This is my girlfriend–Maren.”

He eased her forward.

She was gorgeous. Maybe five–three, soft curves, brown eyes, short black bob, and a smile that made her look like sunlight. Shy, too–there was a carefulness in her gaze.

“Hi, Maren,” I said, pulling her into a hug. “We’ve heard so much about you. It’s really nice to meet you. And I love your suit.”

She giggled into my shoulder and hugged me back. Natalie bent down and wrapped her up too.

“I’m their princess,” Maren went on. “They’re protective. Our parents passed away when we were young, so my oldest brother, Jared–he was twenty–one then became my guardian. I was fifteen. My

other two brothers, Sawyer and Micah, were seventeen. They’re identical twins.”

“I’m so sorry,” I said. “About your parents.”

“Thank you.” Her voice softened, but she didn’t crumble. “It was awful, but we got through it. And

when I met Gavin, I was kind of gun shy about him.” She glanced between them. “I mean… look at him.

Look at me.”

Natalie immediately shook her head. “No. You’re lovely.”

Maren gave a small shrug. “I don’t exactly match Florida’s aesthetic. And then I see all of you.”

Gavin leaned in close, voice low and rough at her ear. “Baby, you’re gorgeous. You’re fun. You’re adventurous. And you know how much I love your body.”

I exhaled without meaning to. They were stupid cute.

Natalie flexed her fingers like her hands were cramping. “Can we set this down? My arms are turning into jelly.”

We reached what looked like a whole quilted archipelago–blankets layered over blankets, little circles of people forming around them. Firehouse guys were scattered throughout, and a couple girls I didn’t

know.

I introduced Natalie, and Dylan swept in almost immediately, starting up a conversation with her like they’d been friends forever.

I spread out our blankets on the growing “blanket island,” still scanning for Jace and Milo.

Then I found them.

My smile vanished so fast it felt like a slap. My hand flew to my mouth.

Jace had both arms around two brunette bombshells. One wore a tiny red bikini; the other, black. Sun-

kissed skin, long legs, both tall enough that their heads hit around his shoulders. They clung to him

like they belonged there. Jace looked down at them, smiling.

Milo walked up holding a football.

One of the girls peeled off Jace and launched herself into Milo’s arms. Milo threw his head back, laughing, and when he looked down again his face was soft and pleased. She cupped his cheek. He

leaned into her palm.

Her legs hooked around him. Milo had his hands under her butt, holding her up like it was nothing.

She was talking nonstop. I couldn’t hear the words from where I stood, but I didn’t need to.

Tears swelled before I could stop them. My stomach dropped like I’d missed a step.

I had waited too long.

They’d found two new girls.

So much for me thinking they wanted a third.

Natalie’s voice cut in, sharp with concern. “Scar. Are you okay?”

I turned to her and forced my mouth into something like a smile. One tear still slid down anyway.

I wiped it fast. “I’m fine. It’s not like we were official.” My throat tightened. “I just… I thought they wanted me. I should’ve known better, right? I’m not the kind of girl men pick for forever.”

Natalie’s eyes went hard. “That’s bullsh–t and you know it.

“Is it?” I said, bitter. “Brennan didn’t want me. Jace and Milo have already replaced me. Gavin has Maren.” My voice dropped. “Like he said–I’m what the dick wants. Not what the heart keeps.”

Natalie flinched. “He didn’t say it like that.”

“It’s still true.”

Maren stepped closer, brows drawn together. “Hey. What happened?”

I swallowed. “I was going to tell the guys I like… that I want to be with them. But I just saw them with two other girls.”

Maren’s face snapped into outrage. “Well, fuck them. You can share Gavin with me.”

Gavin immediately choked on his drink. “Um–babe?”

She didn’t even blink. “Gavin, you know I’ve talked about this. I want a threesome with another girl. Scar can be that girl.”

“Um, no, Maren,” I said, even as I tried to smile.

“You’re beautiful,” Maren insisted. “I’m extremely into you. And I know you and Gavin have had sex

before.”

“Maren, you’re sweet,” I said gently. “But I do have an idea. If I can borrow Gavin for a few minutes- just to flirt like crazy and dance with him–it would help my ego,”

Maren’s eyes gleamed. “Do it, babes. Watching women flirt with Gavin turns me on.”

Gavin let out a helpless groan as I grabbed his hand and tugged him toward a quieter stretch of sand.

“Gavin,” I said, lowering my voice, “can you dance dirty–with a little salsa mixed in?”

His brows lifted. “You mean we salsa and then my hands and my body are all over you at the right moments? You want us to basically have sex while fully dressed.”

“Yes,” I said. “That.”

He glanced back toward Milo and Jace. “This is going to piss them off, Scar.”

I followed his gaze. “I don’t think they’ll care. They’ve got two gorgeous women hanging off them and they haven’t even noticed I’m here.”

Down the beach, one girl was on Milo’s back now, laughing into his ear. The other had Jace by both hands, pulling him away like she was leading him somewhere. He smiled and went with her.

Gavin exhaled. “Okay, doll. If you want to do this–then let’s do it.”

I called out to Natalie, “Crank Pussycat Dolls–‘Don’t Cha.“”

Natalie yanked the portable speaker from the beach bag, plugged in her phone, and turned the music up loud.
