My whole body locked up.

My pulse was battering my ribs hard enough to sting, and sweat prickled along my hairline, then slid down the back of my neck and bloomed under my arms.

“Move, Scar. Just move,” I muttered under my breath, but my feet refused to cooperate–because the second I did, I was sure I was going to die.

Less than three feet away, sprawled across the ground like it owned the place, was the biggest snake I have ever seen in real life. It wasn’t even slithering. It was just… coiled, lazy, sun–soaked. Thick as hell, with a head about the size of one of those popsicles with two sticks,

At least the gator was moving away from me, unbothered. The snake, though–no. That thing was watching me like I was dinner.

The snake’s tongue darted out.

I made a humiliating little squeak.

Footsteps pounded toward me. Then I heard Milo and Jace yelling my name.

“Baby–why did you bolt like that? What happened? Did we do something?” Jace fired off as he

reached me, putting himself between me and… whatever fresh hell I was staring at.

Did he seriously not see the massive snake?

His hands framed my face, warm and steady, and then his expression shifted when he finally clocked

the panic on mine.

“S–s–s–snake,” I got out, barely louder than a breath.

Milo arrived right as I said it. He looked past Jace, then–of all things–snorted like it was no big deal.

And then he walked straight up to it.

My stomach dropped.

I watched, horrified, as he grabbed the snake–one hand controlling its head, the other gripping the

thick body like he was picking up a rope. Jesus fuck, it was easily four feet long.

He carried it across the street and released it on the other side like he was taking out the trash.

Then he jogged back.

I was staring at him like he’d just descended from the heavens.

“Scar?” Milo called.

I blinked, still trapped in the cradle of Jace’s hands. “There’s also an alligator, but it walked off the other way.”

Even saying it out loud sounded insane.

Milo’s gaze sharpened. “Okay. Tell us what happened back there.”

The words burst out of me like a dam breaking. “You’re rich. Like–ridiculously rich. What are you even

doing with me? I’m nothing. You two could have anyone you want–any girl, any guy. You’re so out of my league it’s not even funny. I’m average. Average height, average face. My boobs are small–okay my ass is decent, I guess–but you could do so much better.”

Jace’s eyes went dark in a way that made my throat go dry.

“That is complete fucking bullshit,” he said, voice rough. “You’re not average–you’re gorgeous. The first time I saw you, I got so hard I could’ve used my dick to hammer nails, and that was from one photo on Milo’s phone. Then I met you at Club Drei, and I got to smell you, taste you, feel you… everything in me snapped into place.

My throat tightened. “Really? You don’t think I’m just… some washed–up divorcee? Like used goods?”

“Fuck no,” Jace said instantly. “Honestly? We’re glad you’ve lived through that, because now you know what you won’t accept. And you’ll be able to train us.”

I laughed an actual giggle–because he managed to make it sound both filthy and sweet.

These two were… unreal.

I wanted to wrap them up in bubble wrap and keep them safe.

“I’m sorry,” I told them. “I got overwhelmed and ran. I wasn’t ready to hear all that.”

“We know,” Milo said. “And we’re sorry we didn’t tell you sooner.”

Jace’s mouth twisted into a pout. “So we’re okay? You’ll come back to the house? Because I’m pretty sure Junia and Joe–and probably Everett–are murdering all the éclairs.”

“Relax,” I said. “I’ve got more at your place. In the fridge.”

“You’re fucking perfect,” Jace murmured.

He kissed me like he couldn’t help it–hot, claiming–and then guided me toward Milo so Milo could

kiss me too.

We headed back to Lydia’s house hand in hand, me tucked between them.

The second we walked into the kitchen, I apologized for losing it.

“No biggie,” Junia said through a mouthful of éclair. “At least now we know you’re not some shameless gold digger.”

“Junia Louise,” Lydia scolded.

“What? I’m saying I like her for my brothers, and I’m glad she’s not here for the bank account.”

Junia and Joe squealed. Lydia sighed like she’d seen this movie a thousand times.

I glanced at Jace.

He was laughing under his breath.

“And people call me the possessive one,” he muttered while Milo and Everett rolled around on the floor.

They both froze.

Milo climbed off Everett with murder in his eyes. Everett had a split lip and looked pleased about it.

“I love pushing their buttons,” Everett announced, smug as ever. “It’s basically the only way I can get
