Arthur hurried from the office back to the hospital. A pack of reporters had swarmed the main entrance- news had broken about Charles‘ will being made public and everyone was clamoring for details.
“Mr. Myers, does the will clarify the ultimate ownership of Myers Group?”
“Can you share who will inherit Charles‘ personal assets
“Mr. Myers, is your wife Jennifer included in the will?”
Arthur ignored every question. Flustered, he all but ducked behind his security and assistants, who shielded him as they pushed through the crowd and into the building.
“Increase security details. Make sure no press slips inside. Under no circumstances are any photos of Charles‘ medical treatment to leak,” Arthur instructed his team, his expression stern.
Myers Group held a solid standing in Capaville, and at a time like this, every move surrounding Charles was being watched. Whether it was industry peers, competitors, or the general public online, people were fascinated by the drama of wealthy families–any snippet of information could be blown out of proportion.
Charles had entrusted him with leading Myers Group, a sign of deep trust. Arthur knew perfectly well that his grandfather’s condition was extremely fragile. The will hadn’t been formally announced yet; once it was, certain distant relatives from the Myers family would undoubtedly try to stir up trouble.
During this period, no additional “bad press” could be allowed to surface.
After issuing instructions, Arthur stepped into the elevator headed for the top–floor ICU.
He felt drained. Watching the floor numbers rise, he let out a slow breath. It had only been two straight days of dealing with this crisis, yet it felt more exhausting than closing a billion–dollar deal in the past.
Was it because he couldn’t accept his grandfather’s decline?
Or was he worried that if his grandfather passed, he wouldn’t be able to steer Myers Group alone?
A sudden ache tightened in his chest. If Chloe were here beside him now, maybe she’d have the right insight.
Chloe…
Thinking back to her time with the Myers family… back then, she’d occasionally comment on company matters. Her remarks had seemed offhand, but in reality they were often the most straightforward and honest advice.
He had completely overlooked her back then. Now, even missing her felt like a luxury.
Arthur clenched his fist, inwardly mocking himself. Arthur, look what you’ve done.
The elevator chimed softly as it reached its destination. Arthur stepped out, his face settling back into a mask of calm.
“What’s the latest?”
“Mr. Myers, Charles‘ condition remains unchanged–hes in a deep coma,” the lead security officer reported with a slight nod. “The doctors say the chances of him regaining consciousness are extremely slim.”

Still, the doctors had initially given him only two or three days. Now, after forty–eight hours, Charles was still breathing with the help of a ventilator. To Arthur, that alone felt like a small mercy.
“Understood. Maintain the watch. No unauthorized personnel near his room,” Arthur said before walking straight toward Charles‘ treatment room.
Outside the door, Madilyn sat flanked by two senior members of the Myers family.
Seeing Arthur approach, they all stood.
“Arthur, you’re here,” one of the uncles greeted him, rising from his chair. “Charles‘ vitals are dipping. It’s not looking good.”
“Arthur,” Madilyn cried softly, getting to her feet. Her voice was thick with tears, her eyes red and swollen. She trembled slightly, looking more frail than ever.
Arthur took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. “Mom, you’ve been here for two days. Let me have someone take you home to rest.”
“No, I won’t go. I’m staying right here. I need to be here when Charles wakes up,” Madilyn insisted, stepping back and shaking her head firmly. “Charles trusted me with so much, handed me such a heavy duty. How could I leave? I’m not going anywhere until he opens his eyes–no matter how long it takes.”
“Madilyn, you don’t have to do this to yourself. You’ll run yourself down,” the man beside her said gently.
“I’ll be fine. I’m staying.” Madilyn turned and sat back down in the chair, and her gaze fixed firmly on the ICU door.
Watching her, Arthur didn’t press further. How could he not want to stay by his grandfather’s side? But with the company unsettled by Charles‘ condition, he had to hold things together at the helm.
