Tim going in to see Grandpa,” Arthur said to his uncle, as voice flat, before turning and entering the ICU.
Charles lay in the hospital bed, a network of tubes and monitor wires covering him. If not for the steady. rhythmic lines and numbers on the screens beside him one might have thought he was already gone.
Arthur closed the door softly behind him and walked quietly to the bedside. Seeing Charles so reduced, a heavy, aching pressure settled in his chest.
Who would’ve guessed Myers Group’s once fearsome tycoon would wind up like this?
“Grandpa,” Arthur whispered. There was no response.
The monitors continued their steady beeps and traces, showing no change–a calm that felt more unnerving than any alarm.
Arthur sat down in the chair and gently took Charles‘ hand. It felt cold. He instinctively wrapped both of his own around it, trying to transfer some warmth.
“Grandpa, I regret it,” Arthur murmured, bowing his head, his voice barely above a breath. “I regret losing Chloe. By the time I understood what I’d done, it was too late.
“I wasn’t good enough for her. I didn’t deserve her.
“Grandpa, I’m… lost right now. Can you wake up? Please
“I’m sorry… I’ve let you down. Completely.”
“Arthur, the doctors are here for their check.” Madilyn’s voice came from outside the door, pulling him back.
He realized he had unconsciously slumped forward against the bed, still holding Charles‘ hand, and had dozed off.
He checked the time–only about five minutes had passed. Yet in those few minutes, he had felt a strange lightness, as if a weight had briefly lifted. That deep, grinding exhaustion seemed to have vanished.
Arthur stood, quickly wiping at the corners of his eyes. He took a steadying breath and opened the door.
No one had dared step foot inside the treatment room while the door stayed shut. The moment Arthur stepped out, Madilyn, the attending physician, and several senior members of the Myers clan were already waiting for him.
Seeing Arthur’s slightly reddened eyes, Madilyn asked with concern, “Arthur, have you been… crying?” Arthur gave a slight shake of his head. “No. Just running on no sleep for two days. It’s catching up to me.” Hearing this, Madilyn immediately fretted. “You can’t go on like this. If you collapse, who will hold this family together? The Myers family is at a critical point. You’re our hope now, Arthur. You can’t get sick. What would I do if something happened to you?”
“She’s right, Arthur. You really must get some
“Go home. Try to sleep.”

“Arthur, you understand the family’s situation better than anyone,” one of them said. “You’re at the helm now. If you go down, there’s no one to steer the ship.”
Listening to them, Arthur gave a slow nod. “I know. I’ll manage.”
“I’ll ride back to the house with you,” one of the senior relatives said, his tone brooking no argument. “Get some proper rest. I’ll help oversee the arrangements. Charles lived a life of stature. Now that he’s reached this point, we cannot let anything be handled with less than the utmost care.”
The others present murmured their agreement.
Madilyn took Arthur’s hand, her voice pleading. “Arthur, this family is depending on you. You must not break down. I’ll stay right here—don’t worry, your grandfather will be alright.”
Arthur nodded again. “Alright. I’ll go back for a little while. I’ll return as soon as I can.”
Madilyn watched as Arthur left with the group of family members. She stood until they had all disappeared down the corridor before returning to her seat.
