Madilyn prepared to go to the lounge to rest. She had no intention of staying to play nursemaid. Her only reason for remaining was to ensure Charles didn’t wake up. Only the dead kept secrets. She absolutely could not let him live.
“Madi…”
Just as her hand touched the doorknob, she thought she heard a sound. She paused, a mocking thought crossing her mind. The old man is hanging on by a thread. im waking up would be a miracle. That’s what his lead doctor said. The voice I just heard–so faint–couldn’t be Charles! It’s not possible. I must be hearing things from the stress of the last few days.
Right now, the only other person who knew the truth was Kevin. But Kevin was on her side–at least, he was in her boat now. Unless he wanted his family to go down with him, he had no other choice.
No one else knew what had happened. She’d dealt with the surveillance system; there was no footage of her pushing Charles down the stairs. Nobody saw what went down. The video only showed Charles falling. As for the rest, she had covered her tracks perfectly. Even if a forensic tech went looking, they wouldn’t find a
trace.
When experts faced off, the smart one didn’t leave evidence behind.
No one would ever be able to pin this on her.
“Ma… di… lyn…”
The voice was very faint. This time, Madilyn heard it clearly. It was Charles‘ voice, weak but unmistakable.
Madilyn, holding the doorknob, had already pushed the door partway open. She slowly turned her head to look behind her.
On the hospital bed, the figure who had been lying utterly still now had his eyes open.
Charles was awake.
He was staring at her, his eyes bloodshot, almost feral, glaring with pure hatred.
Shock flashed across Madilyn’s face. She couldn’t believe that with injuries that severe, Charles had actually regained consciousness?
This… How was it possible?
Had her earlier taunts provoked Charles, jolting him awake?
Did that mean Charles now knew all her secrets?
It couldn’t be!
Madilyn’s grip on the doorknob tightened. She pulled the door closed again and, as she released the handle, quietly turned the lock.
“Charles, you’re awake!” Madilyn turned around, looking at Charles on the bed, a faint, cold smile playing on her lips. There was no need for pretense anymore.

You… you…” Charles glared at Madilyn, trying to raise and to point at her, but it only lifted halfway before falling weakly back onto the sheets.
“You waking up is a genuine medical miracle. Or maybe should say, you’re just too stubborn for your own good–even this couldn’t finish you.” Madilyn walked slowly forward, closing the distance between them.
“It was you… who killed my son.” Charles‘ voice trembled, emerging as a hoarse, strained rasp. “It was you, who betrayed this family. What happened to me… That was you too.”
Hearing his certainty, Madilyn sneered. “That’s right. It was me. So what?”
“You…”
“Your will—no one knows the real one. I’ve taken care of it. Now, everything is mine. What do you think you can possibly change?” Madilyn leaned in closer to the bedside, her voice dropping to a triumphant, venomous whisper. “You can’t change a thing. Just watch I will take everything from Myers Group. This family will be mine.”
“You…”
“Arthur inherited his pathetic father’s weakness–indecisive, hesitant, always in the way!” Madilyn scoffed. “Old man, since you’ve been digging around in the background, you must know I have a son and a daughter on the outside, right? They’re my lover’s children. They’re waiting for their inheritance too.
“If Arthur behaves himself, Myers Group can remain under his name. After all, he is Kane’s child. It’s only fitting he runs the family business. But if he becomes a problem… I don’t mind letting someone else take the reins. My son and daughter would love to get some experience at the company.” Seeing Charles glare at her with pure, undiluted venom, that look of wanting to speak but being unable to–it only fueled her triumph.
That look in his eyes… he wanted nothing more than to tear her limb from limb. But did he have the power to do it?
She let out a soft, contemptuous laugh. “Look at how pathetic you are now. Like a wounded animal? It’s a shame, but no one is coming to help. Because this moment… is where your story ends.”
Charles‘ eyes widened in horrified understanding. In the next second, Madilyn reached out and pulled the breathing mask from his face.
