Madilyn tossed the breathing mask aside. It clattered onto the floor, and Charles‘ eyes widened further in panic.

He struggled for air, his mouth gaping as he tried to draw a breath, but without the machine, he lacked the strength to even inhale properly.

A final, furious glare was fixed on Madilyn. He tried to raise a hand, to press the call button–but his arm wouldn’t obey. Slowly, his frantic movements grew weaker, until his entire body went still.

Charles took his last breath. On the medical monitors, the rhythmic lines began to falter, the numbers plummeting until every reading settled into a flat, silent trace.

Seeing this, Madilyn’s eyes turned to ice.

“Should have happened sooner. You old relic had no business lingering. Go join your useless son wherever he ended up.”

Madilyn reached out and checked for breath under Charles‘ nose. Only after confirming there was none did she withdraw her hand. Quickly, she picked up the mask from the floor and placed it back over his face, adjusting everything to look exactly as it was before. She then walked to the door, turned the lock, and left it slightly ajar.

She cast one final glance at the motionless figure on the bed, then roughly tousled her own hair, making herself look disheveled and drained.

Satisfied, Madilyn began to shout, her voice cracking with feigned desperation.

“Someone… Someone help! Charles… Something’s wrong!”

At her cries, the bodyguards stationed nearby were the first to rush over. Taking in the scene, they immediately started making calls.

Soon, doctors arrived, then nurses, followed by the elders of the Myers family. Finally, Arthur hurried in as well.
