“Chloe, you are not welcome here. Get out. Now.” Madilyn pointed toward the entrance, her voice sharp with fury. “Today is Charles‘ funeral, a solemn occasion for this family. I will not allow you to turn it into a spectacle. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave this instant, or I’ll-
“Or you’ll what?”
A faint, cold smile touched Chloe’s lips as her eyes met Madilyn’s, a sudden glint of ice flashing within them.
Madilyn’s expression darkened under her gaze. “The Myers family did not invite you. We do not want you here. You–get out now.”
“Madilyn, why the rush?” Chloe’s soft chuckle held no warmth. “I came to pay my respects. I am, after all, a guest. It’s one thing for the family to be inhospitable, but to throw someone out publicly–isn’t that rather uncivilized?”
“What kind of guest shows up uninvited? You have no ties to this family anymore. Who gave you the right to be here?” Madilyn shot back, her anger mounting.
Hearing this, Chloe’s smile deepened. “You may not have invited me, and I’ll own that I came without an invitation. But… Charles‘ final farewell–how could it be complete without me?” With a light, almost mocking laugh, her gaze drifted past Madilyn to land on Arthur, who had just noticed the disturbance.
Arthur had been acknowledging condolences when the shift in the crowd’s attention caught his eye. His focus settled on Chloe–vivid and startling as a flame against the muted backdrop, instantly commanding the room.
For a moment, everything else faded. He took an instinctive step forward until Jennifer’s hand on his arm pulled him back to the present.
“Arthur, Chloe is here,” Jennifer said, her tone laced with feigned concern. “How could she dress like that for Charles‘ service?”
Arthur took another look at Chloe’s attire, and his brow furrowed. This was his grandfather’s funeral. Regardless of their past, showing up in such a bold, attention–grabbing color was profoundly inappropriate
Hearing the rising tension in Madilyn’s voice, Arthur gently disentangled his hand from Jennifer’s. “I’ll go see what’s happening. We can’t have a scene today.” His voice was low.
With that, he strode toward the center of the commotion.
Jennifer remained where she was, watching him walk away before letting a frosty glare settle on Chloe across the room.
“She shouldn’t have come,” Jenarth whispered, moving to Jennifer’s side and taking her hand. “Mom… I have a bad feeling about this.”
Jennifer tensed at his words.
A bad feeling—she felt it too, a cold, inexplicable dread coiling in her stomach.
“Who do you think you are to attend Charles‘ funeral?” Madilyn sneered. “And even if you had the right, is that how someone dresses for a memorial? You look like you’re here to pick a fight. Today is a sacred day for

this family. With so many elders present, if you dare cause a disruption, I will make sure you regret it.”
Madilyn’s voice dripped with contempt. Chloe and Arthur were divorced. The sheer audacity of showing up. now was staggering. She wouldn’t tolerate it.
Charles was gone–there was no one left to shield Chloe And here, at Myers Estate, Madilyn was in charge.
If Chloe wanted a scene, she’d have to go through her first.
