Chloe paid no attention to the murmuring crowd. Her gaze remained fixed on Arthur, the smile on her face slowly fading. “Arthur, first, I owe you an apology.”

His heart gave a sudden, hard thump. Chloe was apologizing to him? Was he hearing correctly?

“You… Frank was left momentarily speechless, taken aback by her brazenness.

“Chloe!” Madilyn finally exploded. She pushed past Arthur, stepped forward, and jabbed a finger toward Chloe. “You’re here to start trouble? Who do you think you are? This is Myers Estate. Only family and invited guests are permitted. You were not invited, so get out. Now.”

“Security! Security!” Madilyn shouted. For the service, they had hired a professional security detail to maintain order and keep the media at bay.

No troublesome reporters had gotten through, but this little schemer, Chloe, had.

She clearly didn’t understand who was in charge here now.

Several uniformed security personnel hurried over, looking expectantly at Madilyn.

“Remove this uninvited guest. She is not welcome,” Madilyn ordered, her finger still pointed accusingly at Chloe.

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible, Bruce said with a thin polite smile. Standing slightly ahead and to the side of Chloe, he cast a cool, assessing glance over the assembly, including Madilyn. “My boss has instructed that Ms. Lewis is to have free rein today. Anyone who attempts to interfere will have to go through me first.”

The term “boss” said enough. Bruce’s commanding aura was palpable, causing several people nearby to instinctively take a step back. Just who was this mysterious boss?

Madilyn glared at Bruce and the men flanking him, a spark of angry recognition in her eyes. She felt sure she’d seen these men before. If she remembered correctly, this man was one of Eugene’s top people.
