Madilyn’s smile vanished, replaced by a sneer. “Chloe, tell me, am I right? You’re quite adept at wrapping men around your finger, aren’t you? From the young to the old, you have them all under your spell.”
Chloe looked at Madilyn calmly. She wasn’t angered by the vicious slander. On the contrary, her expression remained utterly composed, even more relaxed than before.
“Madilyn, you are beyond redemption,” Chloe said quietly, her gaze shifting to Arthur. “Arthur, this is your mother. Your trusted mother. To get what she wants, she wouldn’t hesitate to harm Charles. And now, at a time like this, she is still trying to tarnish Charles‘ reputation. Tell me, is she not utterly despicable?”
“Chloe…” Arthur didn’t want to believe there could have been anything inappropriate between Chloe and Charles either, but the insinuations were hard to dismiss. Back then, it was Charles who had called him and declared that Chloe was to be his wife.
At the time, Arthur had rebelled against the idea. He never expected to be thrust into an arranged marriage.
Chloe was beautiful; he admitted being captivated by her looks at first sight. But resentful of his grandfather’s high–handedness, he had resisted, deliberately ignoring her. Even their wedding had been a cold, formal affair.
If not for subsequent events, he might not have shown up at all.
Why had Chloe agreed to marry him?
He didn’t know. And now, his mother’s words planted a seed of poisonous doubt in his mind.
He knew Chloe wasn’t just some simple girl from a small town–that was impossible. From the moment he learned of her design talents, he knew her identity wasn’t straightforward.
Where exactly had his grandfather brought Chloe from? He had never known, and even his private investigations had turned up nothing.
There was a secret between his grandfather and Chloe. What was it? He didn’t know.
He had once wanted to uncover it, but now… he found he didn’t want to know anymore.
“Arthur, you are beyond saving as well,” Chloe stated, clearly seeing the flicker of doubt in his eyes. “Blind and foolish–that describes you perfectly.” She withdrew her gaze, refusing to look at him again.
“Madilyn, I said I have a witness. Aren’t you the least bit curious who it is?” Chloe gave a light,

humorless laugh. When she lifted her eyes to meet Madilyn’s again, there was nothing but icy contempt in her gaze.
Madilyn was startled by that look, her heart giving an uneasy lurch. A cold dread made her reluctant to ask who the witness might be.
“Isn’t anyone else curious who the witness is?” Chloe’s lips curved into a slight, challenging smile. “So many members of the Myers family are here. Surely you’re wondering too?”
At her words, the expressions of the family members darkened.
Charles‘ will–of course they had questions. But whether it was the version Madilyn presented or the one Chloe alleged, the contents seemed unfavorable to their own interests.
When faced with matters of pure self–interest, anything that didn’t benefit them directly was often better left unexamined. They’d rather watch the spectacle unfold, let the players tear each other apart. If they could benefit from the fallout, all the better.
No one spoke. The room fell into a heavy silence, all eyes fixed on Chloe, waiting for her so- called witness.
Madilyn stared at Chloe, displeasure and a flicker of panic in her eyes. She was about to shout at Chloe to stop this charade when a calm, authoritative voice cut through the quiet.
“I was present when Charles recorded that video.” Following the voice, Eugene stepped forward.
As soon as Eugene appeared, the crowd’s attention snapped to him.
People instinctively made way. He walked forward with the natural, untouchable grace of one born to command, an innate nobility setting him apart from everyone else in the room.
The guests who didn’t recognize Eugene watched with open curiosity.
