Chloe and Eugene were just business partners–there was nothing romantic between them at all. But when Madilyn brought it up, old memories came rushing back, and in that moment, a voice in Arthur’s head told him the truth–Eugene and Chloe were really close.

“Chloe, you and that man…” he started to say.

“You are correct. We do have a very good relationship.” Chloe did not deny it and answered directly. “I am single, and he is unmarried. Even if we were to become romantically involved, it would be no one else’s concern, would it?”

Arthur was rendered speechless by her words. Who Chloe dated truly was none of his business.

From what he knew, Eugene was an investor, quite wealthy, and—most importantly— unmarried. They were both single adults; if they chose to see each other, it was entirely within their rights.

A voice in Arthur’s head gnawed at him bitterly–what right did he even have to question her? What business was it of his to say a single word?

“Chloe, Charles would never have left a will like that. You are not part of the Myers family- how could he possibly hand everything over to you? If you’re going to forge evidence, at least make it credible. This is simply beyond the pale.” Madilyn shook her head in feigned disappointment. “Charles was so kind to you. When he first brought you home, he insisted you marry Arthur—I couldn’t even stop him. It seems there are many things that happened behind closed doors that we know nothing about!”

Madilyn grabbed Arthur, who was standing there stunned, and snapped at him, “Arthur, wake up! This woman—a girl from a small town with no connections–would do anything behind people’s backs. Why was Charles so exceptionally good to her? And now he supposedly wants to leave the family’s controlling stake to her? Doesn’t that seem suspicious to you?”

“Mom, I-”

Before Arthur could finish, Madilyn burst out, “That woman probably entangled herself with Charles from the moment they met.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, a collective gasp swept through the room, and all eyes turned to Chloe in shock and disbelief.

Could there really have been some unspeakable secret between Chloe and Charles?

Was it because of some hidden, intimate connection that Charles brought Chloe, a girl from a modest background, into the Myers family in the first place? Many had privately wondered about it when the news first surfaced years ago.

Chloe’s origins were humble, yet she was immediately positioned as the future wife of the heir. Her ascent had been remarkably swift. Even the later revelation that she was the eldest daughter of the Lewis family came much later.

There must have been another reason Charles held her in such high regard back then. If it was truly as Madilyn insinuated–that there had been something improper between the old man and the young woman–it was utterly scandalous.

It was almost too distasteful to contemplate.

The looks directed at Chloe from the Myers family members turned to outright disgust. Some even began whispering and pointing behind her back.

“What did Chloe do to make Charles care for her so deeply? To the extent that even after his death, he’s worried about her, leaving her his shares? It’s unconscionable.”

“Fifty–one percent of the shares—that’s an unimaginable fortune. You might as well say he’s handing over the entire Myers legacy to her.”

“Exactly. If he left her a few properties, it might be believable. But the majority stake? I’d have doubts even if he left it all to Arthur, let alone to some young woman! This is bordering on absurd.”

The murmurs among the Myers family grew louder. Seeing the tide of opinion turning in her favor, with the crowd siding with her, Madilyn felt confident Chloe had no leverage. Without concrete evidence, and with that video Chloe had produced from who–knows–when–Charles was dead, so no one could verify it. No witness Chloe could produce would change that.

Suddenly, Madilyn’s phone vibrated in her hand. A flicker of triumph crossed her face–a message at this moment… could it be…?

The criticism swelled around them, but Chloe ignored it all. She simply stared at Arthur, the disappointment in her eyes deepening.

Arthur stood frozen, utterly overwhelmed by the avalanche of accusations and insinuations.
