The members of the Myers family gathered around had, by now, heard Charles‘ account and no longer gave any credence to Madilyn’s denials.
Who would dare question Charles‘ word? His explanation was logical and clear. Madilyn had orchestrated this entire scheme, even going so far as to tamper with the legal will. Crimes of this magnitude were serious enough to put someone away for life, yet here she was, still defiant and brazen, spinning lies even in the presence of the police.
“Madilyn, you should have considered the consequences before you set all this in motion. No one can save you now,” Chloe stated coldly.
Madilyn looked up at Chloe and the others encircling her. For the first time, she felt genuine fear as she registered the disgust and condemnation in everyone’s eyes.
She shook her head, the thought of the notarized will her last desperate anchor. “The will has been notarized! You are legally bound to execute its terms. Right now, I am in charge of the Myers family. What I say goes!”
“Sorry, ma’am,” Landon interjected flatly, not missing a chance to add a jab. “A notarized will is typically followed, yes. But Charles is alive and sitting right here. Charles‘ word is the final authority. What good is a piece of paper now? Where did your version even come from? A vicious schemer like you, guilty of so many heinous acts–you belong in prison to atone. You’ll be lucky if you ever see the outside world again.”
“I told you today would be the day you regretted everything,” Chloe said slowly. Meeting Madilyn’s defiant stare, she added in a low, clear voice, “Kevin, where are you so eager to run off
to?”
At her words, everyone immediately scanned the room for the man named Kevin.
Kevin had indeed used the chaos as cover to sneak toward the exit. A few more seconds of distraction, and he might have slipped away unnoticed.
“Publicly forging a legal document–as an attorney, you know perfectly well what kind of felony that is. You haven’t offered any explanation yet. Where do you think you’re going?”
Somehow, Bruce had materialized directly in front of Kevin. His simple statement was enough to make Kevin’s legs give way, collapsing to the floor.
“It wasn’t me! I didn’t… It was Mrs. Myers!” Kevin immediately shifted all blame, his words tumbling out in a panic. “Mrs. Myers pushed Charles down the stairs. She gave me a large sum of money, helped me pay off my debts… I was trapped. I had no choice but to follow her orders and alter the will.”

“Explain. Clearly,” Bruce commanded, his tone low and his gaze making Kevin’s blood run cold.
“I’ll talk…” Kevin scrambled on his hands and knees back toward Charles and knelt on the floor. “I’m sorry. I lost my way. The will you personally dictated was exactly as Ms. Lewis described. My child was ill, needed an expensive treatment… Mrs. Myers knew about my situation. She covered the costs. I saw no way out. I could only obey her.”
Kevin bowed directly to Charles.
“Charles, I’m sorry. I am truly sorry,” Kevin pleaded from his knees. “Charles, I’ll take full responsibility. Please, just don’t let any harm come to my family.”
Charles paid no heed to Kevin’s desperate appeals. He said calmly, “Realizing your mistake is better late than never.”
“I’m sorry, Charles. But the will has already been notarized. I’ve caused irreversible damage to Myers Group,” Kevin muttered, hanging his head, his voice fading.
“The will was never notarized.” This time, it was Joel who spoke from the sidelines.
