An officer stepped forward and handcuffed Kevin. Seeing the cold metal click into place, Kevin offered a resigned smile, got to his feet, and followed the officers out without resistance.

Joel turned his stern gaze to Madilyn. “Mrs. Myers, you should understand that even if a will is notarized, the living testator holds ultimate authority. With Charles awake and present, any prior document is void.”

“All of you…” Madilyn’s eyes darted around the room, meeting nothing but hostile stares.

She was cornered.

There was no escape. She wanted to cry out for help, but she had alienated every potential ally.

“It’s not true, none of it! How could I possibly be a killer?” Madilyn shook her head violently. Her frantic gaze landed on Arthur. “Arthur, do you believe your own mother is a monster too?”

Arthur looked at her, his expression unsettlingly calm. He said nothing.

“Arthur, save me. I’m being set up.” Madilyn, as if clutching at her final lifeline, lunged forward and seized Arthur’s hand.

“Arthur, I’m innocent. Will you just stand there and watch as I’m falsely accused and dragged away in front of everyone?” Madilyn’s grip on his hand tightened desperately. “Arthur, I am your mother!”

Arthur’s roar of anger erupted, raw and forceful, leaving no doubt about his fury.

The shout startled Madilyn. It was the first time Arthur had ever yelled at her with such vehemence.

Jennifer and Jenarth, watching from a distance, also froze at the sound.

They peered toward the commotion, clearly seeing Arthur being physically pulled by Madilyn.

A flash of irritation crossed Jennifer’s eyes. Madilyn was finished. Now, she had to worry about that desperate woman turning on her.

“I…” Madilyn stared into Arthur’s numb, hollow eyes. Her own gaze darkened as the memory surfaced.

Kane had loved her–loved her so passionately he was willing to renounce his birthright for her. When Charles had opposed their marriage, Kane declared he would walk away from the Myers legacy entirely if he couldn’t be with her. For love, he was ready to give up everything.
