Did she need a schemer like Jennifer? Her own goal was simpler and more brutal–she wanted Chloe dead.
Initially, she had planned to lie low within the Myers household, gathering whatever useful information she could for Jennifer. So, she had disguised herself as a housemaid and blended into the background.
And it had paid off. She had overheard something truly extraordinary.
There was indeed an unusual history between Chloe and Charles. Chloe had saved Charles‘ life, and Charles felt a life debt. As for Chloe’s specific background, she wasn’t sure. But she knew that “someone” was looking for Chloe. This someone seemed immensely powerful–powerful enough to command respect from even someone like Charles,
Who was it? What kind of person? Did this person also want Chloe dead?
If so, then this person could be an ally. Regardless of their motives, she was keen to make contact.
Arthur was infertile. Now that was a spectacular piece of gossip. Who would have thought she’d stumble upon such a juicy secret?
The child Chloe had been pregnant with back then wasn’t Arthur’s. So, this search for “that man“… Did it mean Chloe didn’t even know who the father was?
Arthur was truly a pitiful figure. He’d been unknowingly raising another man’s child for years. If this got out, it would be the scandal of the decade in Capaville.
Chloe, with this information, what right do you have to be so high and mighty?
Wait!
Carolyn’s expression shifted. If Arthur was infertile, then whose child was Jennifer carrying?
Jennifer was certainly clever. She had managed to tie Arthur to her using a pregnancy. In the end, Arthur was the one being played.
Hah!
Jennifer, who knew you had that card up your sleeve?
Hearing footsteps approach, Carolyn silently melted back into the shadows, leaving no trace of her
presence.
Chloe wheeled Charles out of the garden courtyard. At the main entrance, Eugene stood waiting, one hand casually in his pocket. His handsome, poised figure seemed to make everything around him fade into the background.
When Eugene saw them emerge, his gaze settled on her. A faint smile touched his lips as he stood there, gracefully waiting
Watching the scene, a strange feeling stirred in Chloe’s heart. The corridor was long as she pushed Charles

toward them.
There stood Eugene, elegant and composed, with Frank beside him, beaming.

For a fleeting moment, it felt like a wedding scene. She, in a bridal gown, escorted by the family patriarch, walking happily toward her groom.
He was like the bridegroom standing in the spotlight, waiting for his bride, radiant and compelling.
Chloe brought Charles to a stop before Eugene. No one spoke. Finally, Frank broke the silence. “I’ve arranged for a car. Take mine. Charles, I’ll ride with you to the hospital. We have much to catch up on!”
“Very well.”
Eugene glanced at Chloe but said nothing. Instead, he stepped forward and took over from her, his hands settling on the wheelchair handles.
The gesture surprised Charles. If he hadn’t been so frail, he might have protested out of sheer astonishment.
Everyone got into the car. Arthur, having finished seeing off the last of the guests, hurried over.
“Grandfather!”
Charles had just been helped into the vehicle. He stared straight ahead, not even glancing in Arthur’s direction.
“Arthur, you need to focus on managing the family affairs now. Don’t worry about Charles. I’ll ensure he’s well looked after,” Frank said, his tone serious.
“Thank you, Frank.” Arthur’s eyes scanned the occupants of the car. Seeing Chloe and Eugene seated close together, the question that had haunted him for so long–Do you love him?-lodged in his throat, unasked.
The car engine purred to life. Arthur stood motionless, watching as it pulled away and disappeared down the drive.
He remained there for a long time, rooted to the spot. It was only Jennifer’s voice from behind that finally pulled him back to the present.
“Arthur, you’ve been on your feet all day. You must be exhausted,” Jennifer said, carefully avoiding any mention of Chloe. She stepped forward with a look of concern and gently wiped a trace of sweat from his brow.
“Jennifer, I…”
“You don’t need to explain. I understand. Arthur, I choose to stay by your side. I won’t press you about anything else. As long as you know I love you, that’s enough for me.” Jennifer then took Arthur’s hand and guided it to rest on her abdomen. “Arthur, the baby has grown. Can you come with me to the prenatal appointment tomorrow morning?”
