Chapter 450 A Moment of Truth

Chloe looked at the lavish dinner spread before her, then at the impeccably dressed man seated across the table, and felt a bubble of laughter rising in her chest.
The guy was taking formality to a whole new level today.
Eugene was wearing a brand–new suit. For someone who usually lived in tailored casual wear, he had even put on a tie. The effect was a little too serious, making him seem stiff and oddly tense as he waited for the meal to begin. It was almost absurdly endearing. Thankfully, the rooftop restaurant was empty at this hour. If anyone else had been around, they would have undoubtedly done a double–take at Eugene’s unusually solemn appearance–it was tabloid–worthy, for sure.
“You, today…” Chloe began slowly, setting her fork down.
At the sound of her voice, Eugene instinctively straightened his posture, his gaze snapping to hers. His already nervous demeanor seemed to intensify.
“You’re this tense just having dinner. Come on, out with it. What’s the real reason you asked me here?” Chloe leaned back in her chair, studying him with a serious, steady look.
Eugene offered a slightly embarrassed smile, his eyes warm as they met hers. “I really can’t hide anything from you, can I?”
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “So? What’s the plan?”
This man, being so uncharacteristically earnest… She wasn’t used to it.
Eugene’s smile softened. “There’s something I’ve been turning over for a long time. I feel like I can’t wait any longer to say it.”
“What is it?” Chloe asked, her voice gentle.
Eugene held her gaze, and almost at that exact moment, the restaurant’s ambient lighting dimmed subtly. Before Chloe could react, he produced a bouquet of flowers from beside his chair.
“These… I picked them myself from the garden. Every single one,” Eugene said simply, his voice low. He rose slowly to his feet.
“Chloe, I know what I’m about to say might sound straight out of a classic movie,” Eugene began, his tone quiet but clear. “But from the very first moment I saw you, I knew. I wanted you in my life.
“Even back then, when I knew you were married, had a family… all I could think was, when would you be free? So I could have my chance.”
Chloe watched as he came around the table toward her. A faint, understanding smile touched her lips.
This man… He had been transparent from the start. Outwardly so aloof and composed, yet underneath, so fiercely intense.
“I’m grateful you gave me the chance to be close to you. Every moment we’ve spent together is something I treasure, and I’ve spent a lot of time wondering when our relationship could move forward,” Eugene continued, stopping before her. “My parents are also really hoping to see us build a future together.”

Chapter 450 A Moment of Truth
Mention of his parents brought the image of that bold, big–hearted couple to Chloe’s mind.
Goodness, that whole family… they really didn’t do anything by halves.
But for Eugene to bring this up now…

Chloe looked up at the man now standing before her. Seated as she was, he seemed to tower over her, his presence so encompassing she felt he could shield her from the world entirely.
“Eugene, you…” she started, a slight urge to ask him to step back, to give her space to breathe.
In the next instant, she watched as he went down on one knee.
Chloe’s eyes widened. Her hands tightened instinctively on the arms of her chair.
My God… is he…
Her heart skipped a beat. She’d seen proposals in movies, heard friends‘ stories, but facing it herself was entirely unnerving.
When she had married Arthur, the reasons had been pragmatic. She needed a quiet, stable identity, one that wouldn’t attract public scrutiny.
So they had married. With Charles as a witness, no grand romance, just a simple ceremony, and they became husband and wife.
What Eugene was doing now… It caught her completely off guard.
“Chloe, marry me.” On one knee, Eugene held out a custom–designed ring box, opening it to reveal a brilliant diamond ring.
Chloe froze for a moment. She didn’t move, her eyes dropping to the ring. It was exquisite. On the inner band, she could make out fine engraving–his initials.
This ring was made for her. He had put genuine thought into it.
