From her very first encounter with Eugene, she hadn’t felt any aversion. Instead, it was a sense of immediate, intuitive understanding–a meeting of equals she had never experienced before in her life.

Maybe this was what love felt like.

Whether it was deep affection or romantic love, she couldn’t quite name it. Her entire life’s trajectory had never allowed her the luxury of parsing such emotions. For her, existence was binary: survival or death. She had never expected to marry, to have a child, let alone to feel her pulse quicken and her heart race for a man.

Love.

It could be this overwhelming.

“Can you stand up so we can talk properly?” Chloe said softly, her voice low.

Eugene paused, looking up at her with a flicker of confusion. She hadn’t given him an answer, yet she was already asking him to rise.

“Chloe, I—”

“Eugene, I understand what you’re asking, and I know my own mind perfectly well. But now isn’t the right time, okay?” Chloe offered a gentle smile. Without waiting for him to move, she reached out, took his hand in hers, and pulled him firmly to his feet.

Eugene stood, his posture still unnaturally stiff.

“We’ve had dinner. How about we go for a drive instead?” Chloe suggested with a faint smile, getting up herself and keeping hold of his hand. “There’s a place I want to take you.”

Eugene closed his fingers tightly around the ring in his palm, feeling a strange emptiness inside. Yet the warmth of Chloe’s hand wrapped around his was a tangible comfort. He didn’t speak or ask any questions, simply letting her lead the way.

Downstairs, a few SUVs were idling by the curb, with Bruce and a team of security detail posted nearby. They looked unusually tense, clustered together in what seemed like a serious discussion.

Bruce glanced up and saw Chloe descending the steps hand–in–hand with Eugene. His expression immediately darkened.

What did holding hands mean? If the proposal had been successful, Eugene was supposed to give the pre–arranged signal, and the backup team should have already sprung into action. But

“The keys,” Chloe said, holding her free hand out to Bruce.

Bruce hesitated for only a second before placing the key fob in her palm.

Chloe took it, clicked the unlock button, and guided Eugene toward the lead vehicle.

Eugene glanced at her, one eyebrow raised slightly in question.

“You’re riding shotgun. I’m driving tonight,” Chloe said with a smile, opening the passenger door and ushering him in. She then circled the car and slid into the driver’s seat.

Seeing Chloe in this rare, decisive mood, Eugene didn’t protest. He got in promptly and fastened his seatbelt.

“Hold on,” was all Chloe said before the engine roared to life and the car pulled away from the curb with a surge of power.

The acceleration alone made it abundantly clear her driving skills were on a professional level.

The vehicle disappeared down the street, leaving nothing but a faint cloud of exhaust and Bruce standing on the sidewalk, utterly bewildered.

She’d just taken off like that–no orders, no instructions–leaving the entire security team wondering what their next move was supposed to be.

“Bruce, did he close the deal or not?” one of the bodyguards asked.

“Weren’t we supposed to wait for the signal and then launch the fireworks? No signal means it fell through, right? But if it fell through, why was Mr. Rosewood smiling like that when they came down?” another chimed in.

“I’ve never been in a relationship, man, I don’t get it. But I need to know our next orders. Bruce, should we tail them?” a third pressed.
