The thought of hell didn’t seem so bad, as long as she was by his side.

Feeling the ring, now warm from his grip, Eugene silently slipped it into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. It rested right over his heart, where he could feel every steady beat.
After another thirty minutes on the road, the car came to a stop. They had climbed high into the hills.
“We’re here,” Chloe announced, clicking off her seatbelt and stepping out into the cool air.
Eugene was a beat behind her.
He took in their surroundings. They were at the peak’s lookout point, a paved area where you could drive right up to the edge. The view was breathtaking. They’d crossed to the other side of the metro area, and from this vantage point, the entire city they called home lay sprawled out below.
Under the darkening sky, the city lights were beginning to flicker on. A gentle, damp haze had rolled into the hills, blending with the distant urban glow to create a scene that was soft and full of quiet atmosphere.
“This spot is something else,” Eugene said, his voice low.
“Yeah,” Chloe agreed, moving to stand beside him. “The first time I came back to town, I ended up here. Sat right through the night one winter, just watching. All by myself.”
Eugene looked at her. “We could do that tonight. Make our own all–nighter.” A familiar regret tugged at him–if their paths had crossed sooner, everything might have been different.
It would have been one hell of a story.
“Not the worst plan I’ve ever heard,” Chloe replied with a soft laugh. As Eugene shifted, perhaps to draw her closer, she instead placed a hand on the car’s hood. With a slight push, she swung herself up to sit on it.
Perched on the warm metal, she gazed at the tapestry of lights and let out a contented sigh. “This is nice. Could use a drink, though.”
A drink.
Eugene watched the easy smile on her face. “I could call for a delivery,” he offered gently.
“Don’t bother. You’re enough right now,” she said, her eyes finding his and holding them. “Eugene, I really am into you. It’s just… there’s some stuff I have to handle first. Big stuff. Once

it’s all sorted… if…”

“If what?” Eugene asked, leaning in closer. He took a step toward the front of the car, closing the space between them until he was standing right before her.
Chloe looked down at him.
Sitting on the hood put her just a little above his eye level. He stood his ground in front of the car, and the way their eyes locked sent a slow, warm current through the air between them.
“I…” Her voice was barely more than a whisper.
“You what?” he prompted again, leaning in a fraction more.
Chloe suddenly regretted her impulsive move onto the hood. Now she was cornered–this man was effectively blocking her exit, leaving her no graceful way down.
Eugene’s hand came to rest lightly on her leg. The contact was electric, a sudden, thrilling jolt that traveled straight through her, warm and utterly captivating.
“I…” she murmured again, a slight crease forming between her brows.
If If I had a real “if” in my future… She would have pulled him in right then. Would have undone that crisp, buttoned–up facade of his and let pure instinct take over.
But did a future like that exist for her?
She knew it didn’t. The choice she had to make was clear. Going back meant facing a different reality, one where they might never cross paths again.
She was going to hurt him. She’d known it from the first moment she realized how he felt.
She refused to be that person–the one who makes promises she can’t keep. And yet, the pull toward him was something she couldn’t fight.
