At the sound of the voice, Chloe looked toward the doorway. Behind Blaine stood a somewhat frail figure

Scott walked in, glancing at them a bit awkwardly. “Chloe. And the kids–you’re all here.”

He offered an embarrassed smile, then turned his attention to Chloe, his voice earnest. “Chloe, I saw what’s happening online. I tried calling but couldn’t get through, so I went to find Blaine. When I found out he was coming here, I figured he wouldn’t mind if I tagged along. Hope that’s alright.”

Blaine just shrugged. Spotting his granddaughter Melinda lounging elegantly on the sofa, he walked over and gestured for her to move her long legs so he could sit.

Chloe glanced at Scott. “Have a seat.”

“Thanks.” Scott settled onto an empty couch, looking like a first–time visitor–reserved, slightly nervous.

After getting comfortable, he turned to Chloe. “I read through everything. Spent the whole night going through those comments.”

Chloe listened without expression.

“Chloe.” Scott’s tone shifted. “Do what you need to do.”

She paused, lifting her eyes to look at the aging man across from her.

“The Lewis name is in your hands now. Don’t hold back on my account–even if this backlash brings the whole family down, so be it.” Scott’s voice grew firmer. “I know you’ve been through a lot. So act. Don’t worry about the consequences. Even if we lose everything, even if it costs me everything I have to stand with you in this fight–I’m ready.”

At his words, Melinda glanced at Blaine and subtly gave a thumbs–up in Scott’s direction.

“If the sky falls, there are taller people to hold it up.” Robert wandered over casually, snuggling into Chloe’s arms. “And the sky’s not falling yet. What’s there to be scared of? With someone as awesome as me around. we’re not letting a bunch of gossip push us around.”
