Chloe didn’t respond. She just leaned back, eyes half–closed, soaking in the rare moment of quiet.

“Chloe, let’s just put out a statement and throw this back at Arthur. Forget about saving face with them. Charles already gave the green light–what are you waiting for?” Oralia’s voice rose. “The Myers family’s reputation? They did this to themselves. This time, no one’s coming to save them.”

Melinda was about to add her own colorful commentary when Chloe opened her eyes. The words died in her throat.

Chloe lifted her gaze, looking out the window at the sunlight. The sun was beautiful today.

Good weather suited a good mood. And to have a good mood, she’d have to deal with the people digging their own graves first.

Her phone rang. Chloe glanced at the unfamiliar number on the screen, and a faint, elegant smile curved at the corner of her lips.

Someone couldn’t wait any longer.

The phone kept ringing. Whoever it was, they were persistent.

Chloe picked up slowly and hit speaker.

Before she could say a word, a smug voice came through.

“Chloe, it’s Jennifer. So glad you answered. I thought you’d already gone underground, too scared to show your face.”

At the sound of Jennifer’s voice, Oralia, Zachary, and Melinda–who had been lounging–practically sprang to their feet in unison, looking ready to throw down.

“Jennifer, let me ask you something. When you started spreading these rumors, did you think about the consequences?” Chloe’s voice was calm, soft even.

Jennifer laughed out loud, arrogant and unchecked.

“Consequences? That should be your concern.” Her laugh rang through the speaker. “That’s right. I did it all. I leaked your story to the media. What are you going to do about it?

“Chloe, you’ve already taken so much. Why do you still have to fight over the Myers family money? You have no connection to them–you don’t deserve any of it. If you know what’s good for you, you know what to do next.

“Give back everything you took from the Myers family. Apologize publicly to Arthur. Six years ago, you got pregnant with someone else’s child but used it to marry into money by tying yourself to him. Everything you’ve had all these years came because of Arthur. How can you even look him in the eye?

“Chloe, give it all back to him. Refuse everything Charles gave you. Charles won’t be around much longer. Once he’s gone, no one’s protecting you. Hand over the Myers family assets now, and you might still save some face.”

Chloe stayed silent, and Jennifer’s tone grew sharper. “Chloe, Myers Group is holding a public press conference tonight at eight. I expect you there to apologize publicly. As the wife of the Myers family heir, I might then consider not holding you accountable.”

“And if I don’t?” Chloe finally spoke, her voice tinged with amusement, like she might laugh any second.

“If you don’t… the consequences will be severe. Your reputation will be destroyed forever.” Jennifer added smugly, drawing out each word. “Chloe, I’ll be waiting for you at Myers Group. You’ll show up, right? If you don’t have the guts to come, I’ll really think less of you.”

Then she hung up.

Chloe looked at the disconnected call and actually laughed.

“First time I’ve met someone so determined to ruin themselves. Jennifer, Jennifer. You’re really racing toward disaster.”

She sighed lazily and put her phone away.
