“I don’t have much time left.” Charles‘ voice was heavy with resignation. “In whatever days I have, I wanted to do something for this old company. But honestly? I don’t even know what anymore.” He paused, then added quietly. “At the very least, I don’t want to watch a lifetime’s work destroyed just like that.”
Greg understood. He said nothing, just quietly pushed Charles‘ wheelchair through the lobby doors.
They hadn’t made it far before a group blocked their path–distant Myers relatives who’d rushed over.
‘Charles.” One of them stepped forward. “The backlash online is spreading like wildfire. You need to reconsider your decision—about transferring those shares to Chloe. As for who takes over Myers Group, appointing anyone else would be one thing, but choosing Chloe now, with all these rumors circulating…. it’s just not appropriate.”
Another chimed in. “Charles, you must have seen what they’re saying online. The accusations are ugly. If you push forward with this, you’ll only make those vile rumors look true.”
A third voice joined the chorus. “Charles, Myers Group should have gone to Arthur. Handing it to Chloe- how can anyone accept that? Unless… what they’re saying online is actually accurate?”
Charles looked at them, his eyes darkening.
He hadn’t expected these distant relatives–people he barely knew, living overseas for years–to show up now of all times.
They hadn’t even bothered to attend his memorial service.
Now, sensing which way the wind was blowing, they were here to claim their piece?
Making noise now so that if Myers Group ended up in Arthur’s hands, they could demand their share of dividends or special treatment?
He wasn’t dead yet.
Since when did they have any right to make demands?
“Greg, take me upstairs.” Charles‘ voice was calm. “I hear all the senior executives are waiting in the conference room. An old man like me showing up to chair a meeting at this stage… well, that might not be
such a bad idea.”
“Of course.” Greg pushed the wheelchair forward, but when the relatives didn’t move, he said politely, “Excuse us. Please step aside.”
They stood their ground, staring firmly at Charles.
The message was clear: unless Charles agreed, they weren’t letting him through.
Charles looked at them, a chill settling in his eyes.
So this was how it felt to have your authority challenged. He’d grown old, hadn’t he? Over the years, he’d paid less attention to family matters, and now… this was the result. Too many people had gotten bold.

“Grandfather!”
“Charles!”
Arthur’s voice cut through, followed by the voices of Myers Group executives. A crowd gathered, and suddenly the spacious lobby felt cramped.
“Grandfather, you’re not well. You shouldn’t be here. I’ll handle this.” Arthur stepped forward, his voice low.
Charles looked up at him. He could see the exhaustion etched into Arthur’s face, and for a moment, his heart softened.
After all, Arthur was his grandson. A Myers, through and through.
Before Charles could dwell on that, Jennifer’s voice interrupted.
“Grandfather, you really shouldn’t be here. You need to rest.” Jennifer slipped her arm through Arthur’s, smiling at Charles. “Arthur will handle the backlash. Don’t worry–Arthur knows what he’s doing. He can handle anything at Myers Group.”
Charles looked at her, his eyes cold with undisguised contempt.
He’d never bothered to hide his dislike for Jennifer. It was always right there on his face.
Seeing Charles‘ expression, Arthur gently pulled Jennifer back. His grandfather’s health was fragile; he didn’t need Jennifer’s words making things worse.
Arthur already knew how he was going to handle this. There was no need for his grandfather to be here. Arthur understood exactly why these relatives had shown up, why the executives were here–they wanted Charles to revoke the will he’d already settled.
Myers Group was too big a prize. Too many people had their eyes on it, and now, with the rumors raging, they saw their chance to move.
Arthur knew this would be a fight. His plan to announce his resignation would, at least, redirect some of the public backlash. Even if all the criticism turned on him, he didn’t care.
As long as everyone else came through this okay, that was enough.
He knew his grandfather didn’t have much time left. Arthur’s only wish was for Charles to spend whatever days remained in peace.
At the very least, he couldn’t let his grandfather down.
“Grandfather, let me have someone take you back.” Arthur glanced at Donald, waiting behind him. “I’ll handle things here.”
