But Charles spoke first, “So many people are waiting for me. Leaving now would only disappoint them.”
His voice was calm, quiet–betraying nothing.
Arthur looked at him, unsure what to say.
His grandfather was frail. Could he really withstand the pressure from everyone here?
“Grandfather.” Arthur’s tone sharpened, clearly unhappy with Charles‘ decision to stay.
Arthur was worried.
Worried something might happen to Charles.
Worried these people would corner him.
But Charles‘ presence still commanded respect. With just a few words, he’d laid bare what everyone in this room was thinking. They shifted uncomfortably, avoiding his gaze.
Charles scanned the crowd. Every senior executive of Myers Group was here. Not one missing.
Were they picking sides now? Protecting their own interests?
Had they even thought this through?
Did they know the truth before rushing to judgment?
But what did it matter now? Things were already beyond saving.
Could it get worse?
Of course it could.
Charles turned to Arthur, his voice measured. “Arthur. I hear there’s a press conference scheduled–a decision made by the board after careful consideration. Now that we’re here, as interim chairman of the group, would you care to share what you plan to announce?”
All eyes landed on Arthur. He lowered his gaze.
At this moment, Arthur had no intention of telling anyone–not even Charles–that he’d decided to step down as acting CEO.
Once the announcement was made, no one could stop him. Arthur had thought this through for a long time. It was the only way he could see to save both Myers Group and Chloe.
Let the backlash fall on him. His reputation didn’t matter anymore.
“Grandfather. I’ll announce it at the press conference. What I plan to say stays confidential for now.”

Arthur’s voice was steady, his decision made.

Something cold flickered in Charles‘ eyes. Arthur. How many chances have I given you? And now, after a few words from Jennifer, you’ve changed your mind?
So easily swayed. So blind. After everything, he still hadn’t learned.
“Heh. Impressive. You’ve grown capable now. An old man’s words don’t carry much weight anymore.” Charles laughed bitterly, his gaze sweeping coldly across the crowd. “But let me remind you all–I’m not dead yet. What I say still matters at Myers Group.”
The room went quiet. Faces darkened.
