Charles had been there at the hospital, and at that moment, he’d seemed happier than anyone.
Arthur was a new father himself, still dazed by it all. He’d wanted to thank Chloe for giving him a son, but the nature of their relationship didn’t allow for easy words. He hadn’t even known how to say it.
Now so many people stood against his grandfather. Was his grandfather’s thinking wrong?
Could it be that even now, with everything falling apart, his grandfather still insisted on handing those shares and that authority to Chloe?
Arthur didn’t answer. Charles‘ expression turned colder.
Seeing Arthur stay silent, Jennifer couldn’t hold back. She stepped forward, positioning herself in front of Arthur, facing Charles directly. “Charles. I respect you as Arthur’s grandfather–that’s why I call you Grandpa. But what you’re doing right now is heartbreaking.”
Calling me Grandfather?” Charles glanced at her, his voice cold. “You’re not worthy.”
I know my background makes me unworthy in your eyes. You look down on where I come from.” ennifer’s voice trembled slightly. “But I’m married to Arthur now. Legally married. We’re husband and vife.” She rested a hand on her slightly rounded belly. “And we have proof of our love–right here, a child of the Myers family.”
f they looked closely, her pregnancy was visible now.
The more Charles protected Chloe, the more it fueled Jennifer’s confidence. She’d been winning people over. All the senior executives of Myers Group had chosen her side.
Charles didn’t react much to Jennifer mentioning her marriage. But when she touched her stomach and alked about a child of the Myers family, his face twisted with disgust.
That child you’re carrying will never be recognized as part of this family.” Charles‘ voice rose, almost a
oar.
Everyone frowned. Charles‘ temper was out of control. His favoritism had gone too far.
They were legally married. She was carrying his grandchild. And still he wouldn’t acknowledge her?
The room went dead silent. You could hear people breathing.
Charles‘ words carried too much weight. He’d just humiliated Jennifer completely. Even as Arthur’s wife. he couldn’t escape his contempt.
This wasn’t just dislike. It was pure hatred.
Charles.” Jennifer’s voice cracked. “Tell me what I have to do for you to accept me. I’m Arthur’s wife now. We’re married. Our child is coming. What more do you want from me?” She stumbled, collapsing against
Arthur.
Arthur caught her, held her. When he looked at Charles, there was anger in his eyes. ‘Grandfather. That’s

enough.”
“Enough?” Charles actually laughed at Arthur’s reproach.

“Charles, this is really too much.” Mateo stepped forward, righteous indignation in his voice. “Ms. Williams is Mr. Myers‘ wife. They’re legally married–the law protects that. She’s a renowned concert pianist, a respected artist. If you look down on her, Charles, how did you ever accept Ms. Lewis back when she came from nowhere?”
Murmurs rippled through the room. Mateo had just steered the conversation straight back to Chloe.
Now anything Charles said in Chloe’s defense would only fuel the rumors about their relationship.
Charles‘ eyes swept coldly over Mateo. “You dare compare her to Chloe?” He snorted. “No matter what Jennifer does, I will never accept her as part of this family. She married Arthur–that’s her choice. Whether they have children, that’s their business. I won’t interfere.”
Before Mateo could respond, Charles continued, “But let me be clear. Any child Jennifer bears will never be entered into the Myers family lineage. This family will never recognize that child.”
Jennifer clutched Arthur’s arm, tears streaming. “Arthur. What do I have to do? What more can I do?” She broke down sobbing, right there in front of everyone–fragile, vulnerable, heartbreaking.
‘Grandfather.” Arthur’s anger flared. “Jennifer is my wife. We’re legally married. Whether you acknowledge it or not, she’s the person I chose.” He couldn’t understand why his grandfather kept attacking Jennifer like this. Was it simply because she wasn’t Chloe?
He remembered how his grandfather had always pushed him to treat Chloe well, to cherish her–that marrying her was his good fortune. Charles‘ concern for Chloe, for Robert, had always gone far beyond what was normal for a grandfather.
