Arthur opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

‘Myers Group was built by all of us.” Mateo’s voice cut through, laced with contempt. “You can’t just hand it over to some woman–someone with no connection to this company. It’s a joke.”

‘Mateo’s right.” Jennifer’s eyes glittered. “Chloe, if you have any sense, you’ll voluntarily give up everything Charles gave you.” She paused, letting the words land. “Charles only has eyes for you. He’s always on your side. That’s not normal, and I’m not the only one wondering. What exactly is the relationship between you wo?”

Chloe just smiled faintly at the accusation.

Chloe.” Jennifer pressed on. “If your child were Arthur’s, I’d have no problem with Charles giving you all his out of favoritism. But is the child his? Are you brave enough to stand in front of the media and say hat child is Arthur’s?” She rested a hand on her rounded belly. “The child I’m carrying is over three nonths along now. He’ll be a Myers. As his mother, I won’t let someone else take what belongs to him before he’s even born.”

Jennifer.” Chloe’s voice stayed calm, her smile intact. “That’s a nice dream you’ve got. But I should warn you start praying now. Because your dream ends today.”

Jennifer laughed. “You’re the one who should be praying.”

‘Ms. Lewis.” Someone from the crowd spoke up. “You know whether that child is Mr. Myers‘ or not. There’s no smoke without fire. With all the doubts online, are you willing to take a DNA test? That would settle everything.”

“That’s right. Medical technology’s advanced enough–results come back fast. Then we’d know whose child it really is.”

“Charles is here too. Might as well test everyone while they’re at it.”

Someone muttered the suggestion, and a ripple of ugly laughter spread through the room.

Charles slammed his hand against the wheelchair armrest. “How dare you! The disrespect–how did Myers Group end up with such ungrateful people?”

His face flushed with rage, and for a moment he looked like he might pass out. Greg moved quickly, slipping a pill into Charles‘ mouth. After a moment, his breathing steadied.

“Charles, why are you so upset?” Another voice chimed in, dripping with false innocence. “Handing over so much of the company to your granddaughter–in–law–ex–granddaughter–in–law, at that–the future of Myers Group is at stake. People are going to talk. If there’s nothing going on, a simple DNA test would clear it right up.”

The smugness in their eyes was unmistakable.

Jennifer’s voice turned cold. “Chloe. Are you willing to take a test? If the child is Arthur’s, I’ll apologize publicly. The online backlash would have nothing to stand on in the face of real evidence.”

“But if it’s not.” Jennifer emphasized each word. “Then what right do you have to hold onto so much of Myers Group’s assets? You have no connection to this family. Can you even handle that much?”

“Exactly.” Mateo’s eyes slid to Robert, standing behind Chloe. “Myers Group’s assets belong to the Myers family. What do they have to do with an outsider? Unless…”

He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t have to. The implication hung in the air–that Robert might be Charles‘ illegitimate son. Disgraceful, given Charles‘ age.

Charles had only one child, Kane, who’d died young at Madilyn’s hands. A tragedy. At least he’d left Arthur -the legitimate heir.

And now, just as Arthur was about to take full control, Charles had handed half the company to Chloe.

What was really going on?
