“Jennifer, you’re under arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, defamation, and intentionally spreading false information. You’ll need to come with us downtown for questioning.”

At those words, panic flooded Jennifer’s face. She lunged forward and grabbed Arthur’s arm.

“Arthur, please help me! I never wanted anyone dead, I swear. Okay, yes, I hired that driver. I just wanted him to slow them down, keep Chloe and the others from making it to the anniversary party.” Her voice cracked as tears started spilling. “I did it for you, Arthur! “None of this would’ve happened if Chloe hadn’t taken what was mine. Would I hate her this much if she hadn’t?” Her fingers dug into his hand, her voice climbing. “And now she’s taking from you again, Arthur. If you let them take me, we’ll lose everything.

“All of this is on her. These cops are probably here because she pulled strings. Public opinion’s already against me, and now she’s coming for blood. You’re really going to let them drag me and your child away for questioning?” She stared at him, almost hysterical. “Look at everything Chloe’s done to you—and you’re just going to stay quiet?

“She betrayed you, Arthur. She had another man’s kid and let you raise it. You’ve been played for a fool for years, and you’re really okay with that?” Jennifer’s voice rose to a near–shout. “For all we know, that man could’ve been your own grandfather.”

“Jennifer Williams.”

The sharp voice cut through the room like a blade. Jennifer froze.

It was Chloe.

Every head turned toward her.

Chloe lifted her gaze, meeting both Jennifer’s and Arthur’s eyes with a calm that felt almost unsettling. She spoke quietly. “Arthur, you remember what I told you carlier?”

Before Arthur could process the question, Chloe continued, her voice steady. “Jennifer, I don’t know who fed you information, but I’m telling you now–Robert is not Arthur’s child. What you heard was wrong,

“Someone used you. They wanted you to take me out, and in the process, take yourself out too.” A faint smile touched Chloe’s lips as she studied Jennifer. “Too bad you didn’t see it. You played right into their hands and burned your own future down.”

“What are you even saying?” Jennifer’s voice came out shrill, confusion and anger warring on her face.

What did she mean, someone used her? Used her to eliminate Chloe and herself?

“Jennifer, it’s true–my son isn’t Arthur’s. I didn’t find out until later.” Chloe’s tone stayed soft, like she was talking about something as ordinary as the weather.

Hearing that, Arthur felt something twist painfully in his chest.

“Arthur can’t have children. Not ever.”

Those words landed like a bomb. Everyone in the room went still. What did she mean, he couldn’t have children?

Arthur went rigid. “Chloe–what are you saying?”

Jennifer stood frozen too, staring at Chloe like she’d lost her mind.

Arthur couldn’t have children?

She couldn’t mean that literally.

“Something happened back then. I got pregnant, and the baby wasn’t Arthur’s. But at the time, it had to look like it was. “That’s insane. You’re making this up. You’re just using Arthur as an excuse.” Jennifer’s voice shook with disbelief. “If he can’t have kids, then what’s this?” She gestured at her visibly pregnant belly. “This is his baby. Our baby.”

“Jennifer, that’s exactly what I’d like to know. Arthur can’t have children. So whose is that?” Chloe raised an eyebrow, then turned her gaze to Arthur. “Arthur, are you really sure that child she’s carrying is yours?”
