Chapter 491 Robert Is Missing

“Grandpa, I actually already have plans with someone today. Can we take a rain check on dinner?”

Charles paused for a moment at that, then seemed to catch on quickly. A smile crossed his face.

“Ah, I see! Well then, you go enjoy yourself. Have a good time. We’ll definitely get together another day.”

“Mm,” Chloe replied softly. She glanced briefly at Arthur, offering a small smile, then grabbed her bag and phone to head out.

Just then, her phone rang.

She checked the screen. It was Lily Moore, Robert’s homeroom teacher at the academy. Around this time, Robert should have been getting ready for his speech.

She picked up.

“Lily, is it Robert’s turn already? I’m just—”

Before Chloe could finish, Lily’s panicked voice cut through. “Ms. Lewis, Robert is gone!”

“What?” Chloe’s voice sharpened instantly.

Nearby, Charles and Arthur both stiffened at the shift in her tone.

“Ms. Lewis, all the kids scheduled to perform were backstage getting ready. When it was time for Robert to go on, he just wasn’t there. I’ve searched everywhere–I even had security pull the footage. There’s no sign of him. It’s like he just disappeared. I’ve already called the police, and every teacher at the academy is looking for him right now.”

“Okay. I’m on my way.” Chloe ended the call quickly and turned to leave.

“Chloe!” Arthur moved fast, stepping into her path.

“Arthur, move.” Her voice was sharp, impatient. She needed to get to the school. Robert was missing–of all times, now.

“Chloe, you need to breathe,” Arthur said quietly, firmly. “If you go like this, you won’t be able to think straight.”

She stared at him, her breathing slowly steadying.

“Take a second. I’m coming with you. Even though…” He exhaled, a note of helplessness in his voice. “I’m not Robert’s father, we were still married for six years. I’m coming.”

“Jennifer.” The name surfaced in Chloe’s mind instantly, the only one that made sense.

She’d been somewhere in this city all along. Chloe had suspected Jennifer might try something else, but she never imagined she’d go after Robert.

At the name, Arthur’s expression darkened too. He pulled out his phone and dialed his assistant

“Donald, get some people together. I need Jennifer’s whereabouts tracked down. Now.”

Chloe didn’t wait for results. She was heading to the school first. Even if Robert was gone, there might still be something there–some clue, something left behind.

As she reached the door, her phone rang again.

She pulled it out and looked at the screen. Her steps stopped short.

It was Jennifer.

One glance and Chloe recognized the number. Jennifer had used it before, when she’d called to taunt her.

Seeing Chloe’s reaction, Arthur crossed to her in a few quick strides. His eyes landed on the incoming call display, and he understood immediately.

“Chloe.” He gave her a meaningful look but said nothing more.

She stared at the number for a long moment before finally answering.

“Jennifer.” Her voice was cold, flat.

“Heh. Didn’t see this coming, did you, Chloe? Hearing my voice right now must really burn you up, huh?” Jennifer’s taunting came through loud and clear.

“If you so much as touch Robert, I will make you wish you’d never been born.” The words came out low, seething.

“Heh. You think I’m scared?” Jennifer’s laugh turned sharper, more unhinged. “Chloe, I’m going to make you suffer! Your little brat is with me now. If you don’t want him dead, meet me at the docks. It’s time you and I settled things.

“Chloe, don’t try anything. And I mean it–you come alone.” Jennifer’s voice dropped, menacing. “This is between you and me.”

Before Chloe could respond, the line went dead.

She stared at the phone, the cold in her eyes deepening.

Arthur immediately tried calling the number back. Already disconnected.

“Damn it.” He gripped his phone, fury and self–loathing twisting in his chest.

When it came down to it, all of this traced back to him.

His own tangled history with Jennifer had set this in motion. If he’d been more decisive from the start- cut things off cleanly–none of this would have happened. He wouldn’t have dragged so much trouble into their lives. Maybe he and Chloe wouldn’t have ended up divorced.

But there was no rewriting the past.
