The wind whipped against Eugene’s clothes as he stepped into view like some kind of savior, and right behind him, he had Jenarth in his grip.
Jenarth tried to fight back, but Eugene held him by the back of his neck, locking him in place.
“Jenarth!” Jennifer screamed the second she saw him caught in Eugene’s hands.
“Mom!” Jenarth yelled, struggling to break free, but he couldn’t move an inch under Eugene’s iron hold.
“Jennifer, you like making deals so much, right? How about we make one?” Eugene dragged Jenarth forward, his eyes locked on Jennifer with a presence that didn’t leave room for negotiation. “Your son’s life for Robert’s.” As he spoke, Eugene pressed the muzzle of his gun against Jenarth’s temple.
“You…” Seeing Jenarth under control sent Jennifer into a rage.
She’d told Jenarth to hide and keep out of sight. How the hell did he end up in Eugene’s hands? And now this guy shows up again to mess everything up.
Jennifer was boiling inside. She’d already thrown caution to the wind, and now, watching Jenarth get caught, she forced herself to stay composed. “Trading for that kid? That’s a bad deal for me.”
Hearing that, Jenarth’s eyes went wide in disbelief. He never expected his own mother to say something like that.
“I’ve got nothing left to lose,” Jennifer said. “The kid you’re holding is just someone I gave birth to–a bastard with no father, means nothing to me. But this little devil in my hands?” She yanked Robert’s collar, lifting him halfway off the ground. “All of you are so worried about him. He’s the real prize, isn’t he?”
Robert, pinned tight in Jennifer’s grip, didn’t look scared at all. He stared at Chloe and said calmly, “Mom, don’t worry about me. Just shut this woman up. She’s too far gone–there’s no point wasting time on her.”
“Robert,” Chloe called out, her heart aching with worry for him.
But under these circumstances… they couldn’t risk Robert’s life.
Chloe glanced at Eugene, who’d appeared beside her, then at Jenarth, still trapped in his grasp.
Jenarth stayed quiet, held by Eugene like a helpless bird, eerily silent.
“Jennifer, let’s make a deal. I’ll let you walk,” Chloe said steadily. “You let Robert go, take Jenarth, and leave this city. I swear, I won’t come after you.”
“Chloe, did your memory go bad or something?” Jennifer snarled, pressing the blade against Robert’s neck. “I don’t want anything. I just want you to regret this! That’s it!
“If you want your son to live, then get on your knees. Apologize to me in front of these useless men, and then claw up your own face. If that’s enough to satisfy me, I’ll let your son go.”
“They all like you so much, don’t they? Since they’re that into you, I’d love to see if they still do when you’re disfigured.”

Jennifer held the knife against Robert’s neck. “Chloe, make your choice. I don’t have more time to waste with you. Three… two…”
“Mom!” Jenarth’s voice cut through, breaking Jennifer’s countdown.
Jennifer froze. She looked at Jenarth, a flicker of irritation crossing her face. She felt like Jenarth was ruining her moment.
“Mom, don’t you want me anymore? I’m your son!” Jenarth asked quietly, his eyes already red, tears streaming uncontrollably down his face.
Jennifer felt a twinge of annoyance, but Jenarth was still her kid. Over the years, Jenarth had become her right hand, her whole world in every way.
Now, facing life and death, Jennifer looked at Robert, the one she was holding. This little bastard… she could’ve killed him herself. But at this critical moment, Jenarth had ended up in Eugene’s hands. That damn. meddling man.
“Mom!” Jenarth sobbed. “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault for being so useless and dragging you into this.”
In the end, maternal instinct won out over Jennifer’s fury. She tightened her grip on Robert’s neck and growled. “Fine! I’ll do the trade!”
She lifted her eyes to Chloe and hissed, “Chloe, I want you to bring my son to me yourself. We’ll make the exchange right here.”
Hearing that, Chloe looked at Eugene beside her.
‘Chloe. I want you to bring Jenarth to me personally. No games,” Jennifer added, stressing her demand.
Chloe stared at Jennifer, her eyes fixed on Robert in her grip. Making sure he was okay, she answered softly, “Alright. I agree.”
