Chapter 502 A Desperate Escape

Chloe didn’t say another word. She crossed the short distance to Eugene and kept her voice low. “Give himn to me.”

Eugene studied her for a moment, his gaze sharp and unreadable. “Be careful,” he said quietly, and handed Jenarth over. In the same motion, he passed her the gun he’d been holding.

Chloc took it without hesitation, keeping the barrel aimed at the ground. She wrapped her free arm around Jenarth and started walking toward Jennifer.

Jennifer watched her close the gap, a flicker of triumph flashing across her face.

“You know, Chloe,” Jennifer said with a sudden, humorless laugh, “these guys really would do anything for you, wouldn’t they?” Her eyes stayed locked on the shrinking distance between them, and just as Chloe got within about fifteen feet, her tone shifted.

“All right. That’s far enough.”

Chloe stopped right where she was.

“Let my son go, and I’ll let yours go too,” Chloe called out, raising her voice. It echoed across the empty shoreline.

‘Chloe, you’ve got a gun in your hand. How am I supposed to let him go?” Jennifer shot back, glancing at the weapon. “Throw the gun away.”

Chloe didn’t move. Jennifer tightened her grip on Robert, forcing his chin up. “Chloe, you don’t really have a choice here, do you?”

‘Fine.” Without another word, Chloe turned the gun away from them in full view of Jennifer and tossed it onto the dirt nearby.

Jennifer tracked where it landed, then took a step forward, pulling Robert with her. “We let the kids go at the same time. Then you let us walk out of here.”

‘Deal.”

‘How do I know I can trust you?” Jennifer said, suddenly pressing the knife tighter. “What if I let this kid go and you change your mind? And what about those men of yours who are so obsessed with you?” Jennifer shot a look at Eugene and Arthur standing off to the side.

The way Eugene and Arthur were staring at her… It was like they wanted to tear her apart. That look was genuinely terrifying.

Too bad she wasn’t scared at all.

“Jennifer, we’ve known each other long enough. I’m a woman of my word. You let Robert go, and I’ll let you both go.” Chloe’s words were simple, her grip on Jenarth tightening slightly. “Your son for mine. We’re

even. That’s the deal.”

“I’ll count to three. We let go at the same time, and the kids run back to each of us safely,” Jennifer said.

“Two…” Jennifer shouted loudly. At the same time, almost without anyone noticing, her other hand moved slightly behind her back. The motion was subtle, nearly invisible.

Arthur was so tense he could barely breathe. His eyes were glued to Jennifer. He was ready to lunge forward at any second. Even if it cost him his life, he couldn’t just stand there and let something happen to

Robert.

He had to protect them, no matter what.

In sharp contrast to Arthur, Eugene’s gaze stayed fixed on the knife at Robert’s neck, never wavering for an instant.

Just as Jennifer was about to shout “three,” Robert suddenly made his move.

When Jennifer shifted her hand, only one arm was across Robert’s neck, along with the blade in her grip.

Seeing his chance, Robert grabbed Jennifer’s hand with both of his and bit down as hard as he could.

“Ah!” As Jennifer screamed, Robert broke free. At the same time, moving fast, he snatched the detonator Jennifer had tucked into her waistband.

Robert was quicker than Jennifer. He got to the detonator first and took off running.

“Mommy, this crazy lady has a bomb!”

The second Robert ran, Chloe simply let go of Jenarth. She sprinted forward at full speed, trying to reach Robert.

The moment Chloe released him, Jenarth took off running toward Jennifer as fast as his legs could carry him.

When Jennifer saw Jenarth running her way, she barely registered it. Her focus was entirely on the fact that Robert had taken the detonator from her… and on the gun lying on the ground nearby.

All Jennifer wanted was for Chloe to die. Right then, she ignored everything else and dove for the gun on the ground.

Robert ran toward Chloe. Jenarth was running that way too. Seeing the detonator in Robert’s hand and knowing it was his mother’s last resort, Jenarth didn’t hesitate. He spun around and tackled Robert.

Robert went down hard, the detonator flying out of his hand from the impact.

“Jenarth, grab that detonator!” Jennifer snatched up the gun, scrambled to her feet, and seeing how her son had taken down the little bastard, she shouted in triumph.
