His hand tugged firmly on hers, pulling her forward. She leaned in, bracing one hand on the edge of the bed, about to tell him to stop messing around so he wouldn’t strain the wound on his back.
But Eugene was quicker, wrapping his arms around her in a tight embrace.
“Don’t move. Just like this. Let me hold you for a minute, just a minute, Eugene murmured close to her ear, his deep voice rough but somehow soothing.
Chloe stayed still. She kept her hand planted to support her weight, careful not to press against Eugene.
The hospital room grew warm and quiet. The two of them just held each other, neither saying a word.
“You’re okay. That’s all that matters,” Eugene whispered, resting his head against Chloe’s shoulder. He closed his eyes, soaking in this rare, peaceful moment.
Hearing his voice, Chloe flashed back to the instant the explosion hit–how he’d thrown himself over her. shielding her from everything. Not a single piece of shrapnel had touched her.
This guy, so recklessly devoted… How could she push away the feelings he clearly had for her? But in the end, she still….
“You’re an idiot,” Chloe whispered softly. She gently returned his embrace, her movements careful, afraid of accidentally brushing against the bandages on his shoulder.
The door was cracked open.
Arthur stood in the hallway, a bouquet of flowers in his hands. He saw the two of them embracing inside. The hand he’d raised to push the door open froze mid–air.
Chloe and Eugene… Seeing them together like that felt strangely right. Arthur gave a bitter smile. He pulled his hand back without a sound, turned quietly, and walked away.
Eugene had gotten hurt saving Chloe from the blast. After wrapping up his own business, Arthur had come straight over to check on him. He never expected to find her in his arms.
He didn’t feel angry. Just resigned. If Eugene and Chloe ended up together, it seemed more perfect, more natural, than if it were him.
He’d been doing a lot of thinking lately. Looking back, the way he’d treated Chloe… He’d been too arrogant, never considering her feelings. From the very beginning, he was never going to keep her.
Now, knowing that whole incident back then was fabricated, that the guy from that night wasn’t him either -between him and Chloe, there was nothing left. Nothing but a marriage certificate. They’d never really had anything real.
Seems like fate started punishing him a long time ago. He’d never have her. Eugene, from day one, attitude toward Chloe that was: even if she decided to burn the whole world down, he’d hand her the matches and stand right beside her.

If Chloe chose him, she’d actually be happy.
Arthur didn’t stick around. He still had a lot to handle. Myers Industries needed constant mentione He was basically running the show, so he had to make sure everything got done right.
Arthur left the flowers at the nurses station, asked a nurse to deliver them later, and then walked out
Robert sat on a chair, watching Arthur’s figure disappear. They’d spotted Arthur the moment he showed up at the nurses‘ station.
Oralia watched his retreating back–that lonely figure looked so hollow. But they all understood why. If only he’d known then what he knew now.
A mistake was a mistake. No amount of regret could ever turn back time.
“Robert, if Arthur isn’t your dad, then who is?” Oralia mused, curious. “What kind of guy must he have been to have genetics that strong, to make you this ridiculously smart and… honestly kinda terrifying?
Hearing this, Robert couldn’t help but pout. “I’d like to know too!”
“You’re this talented and you still can’t find out? Maybe… maybe he’s not even around anymore? Maybe he’s long gone?” Oralia lowered her voice to a whisper.
Robert shook his head. “I don’t know.”
He’d hacked into more databases than he could count but couldn’t find any DNA profile matching his. The simplest explanation was that the guy might have died years ago, which is why there was no trace.
But there was another possibility: this person’s identity was protected, his data sealed, impossible to find through normal channels.
It had frustrated Robert for a long time. He still hadn’t figured out a solution.
Lately, though, he’d come up with another angle: digging into the hotel where his mom stayed that year. Hotel check–in records were private; the guy probably didn’t use his real info. But if he’d appeared on any hotel surveillance footage, there was a chance.
Even though records from that many years ago were hard to track down, Robert was still convinced he could find a lead.
