Just as they stepped out of the hospital entrance, the security detail’s SUV sat idling by the cu Bruce moved ahead, reaching for the door handle.

Then came the roar of an engine.

A red sports car tore around the corner, executed a sharp drift, and swung to a stop directly ir front of Eugene. The passenger door swung open on its own from the momentum.

The security team reacted instantly. Every bodyguard was out of their vehicles in seconds, hands moving toward concealed holsters. Bruce’s own hand drifted to the small of his back.

Eugene glanced through the open window. A small smile tugged at his lips. “I knew you could drive. I didn’t know you drove like this.”

Behind the wheel, Chloe smirked. “I drive a lot worse than this. Want to find out?”

Bruce caught sight of her face and relaxed. He gave a subtle hand signal, and the bodyguards melted back into their vehicles.

Eugene chuckled softly and slid into the passenger seat.

“I’d like that,” he said, still smiling.

“Buckle up.” She didn’t wait for a response. The moment the words left her mouth, her foot hit the accelerator, and the car launched forward.

The engine’s roar faded into the distance. Bruce stood there a moment longer, watching the taillights disappear around a curve. Then he pulled out his phone.

“Mr. and Mrs. Rosewood. Looks like Mr. Eugene Rosewood won’t be making it to dinner tonight.”

she’d done it a thousand times before.

Eugene watched from the passenger seat, genuinely impressed. The way she handled the car- smooth, confident, aggressive when she needed to be–was something else.

Eugene glanced at her. Her expression hadn’t changed–calm, focused, almost peaceful. H smiled and let her have her fun.

The car finally rolled to a stop in front of Riverville Prime Residence. As it pulled up to the entrance, Eugene sat there for a second, completely still.

He glanced over at Chloe in the passenger seat. She’d already slipped off her seatbelt and m

eyes with a warm smile. “Come on, let’s head in.”

Eugene didn’t ask any questions. He just nodded and stepped out of the car with her.

Once outside, Chloe walked straight to the trunk and pulled out a small shopping bag.

When Eugene caught a glimpse of what was inside, he couldn’t help but chuckle. “How wild : we talking here?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Chloe glanced down at the bag and gave it a little shake. “As wild as you want it to be. We’ll decide after we eat.”

It had actually been Olivia’s idea–she’d suggested Chloe do something low–key and personal with Eugene. A fancy dinner at some overpriced restaurant felt a little fake, so after thinking i over, Chloe decided to cook for him instead.

Earlier that morning, before heading to the hospital, she’d made a quick stop at the farmers‘ market to pick out the freshest ingredients she could find. She wanted everything to be just right.

She’d never really cooked for anyone before. Not like this. Well, except for her dad, Ryan, but she figured that didn’t really count.

“Mr. Rosewood! Ms. Lewis!”

The second they walked through the door, the house staff and security team appeared almost out of nowhere, clearly surprised. Bruce had let them know earlier they’d have the evening off so they hadn’t been expecting anyone. Seeing Eugene and Chloe walk in threw them off for a

moment,

“You’re all good to go. No need to stay.” Eugene said casually, giving them a quick nod. Everyone understood immediately and quietly made their exit.

This was a rare moment alone, and Eugene wasn’t about to let anyone get in the way.

Chloe carried her bag into the kitchen, then turned back to Eugene. “Just relax out there. I’l you when it’s ready.”

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Okay,” he said softly, then made his way to living room and settled onto the couch.

Once she saw him sit down, Chloe turned and headed into the kitchen.

Inside, she gathered everything she’d need—a chef’s knife, a cutting board, mixing bowls. S laid out all the ingredients she’d bought on the counter, then carefully pulled out her phone and opened a video she’d saved earlier.

It was a step–by–step cooking tutorial for a few simple dishes. One of the best things about social media these days was how easy it was to find exactly what you needed. She’d watched : bunch of different videos and picked the ones that seemed the most straightforward to follo

All she had to do was copy what they did on screen.

Simple enough.

Back when she was navigating situations where every second counted, she’d learned to pick things up fast. Cooking? That should be easy.

After giving the video another quick glance, Chloe rolled up her sleeves and got started.

In the living room, Eugene picked up a newspaper from the coffee table and pretended to flip through it, trying to look casual. He wasn’t really reading, though–he didn’t even notice he wa holding it upside down.
