Chapter 513 Cooking Disaster

From behind the newspaper, Eugene stole glances at the kitchen. Chloe was actually going to cook for him. The thought alone had him completely distracted.

He didn’t need some elaborate meal. She could boil him a simple plate of pasta, and he’d drink every last drop of the broth like it was the finest thing he’d ever tasted.

His phone buzzed. Landon.

A string of texts came through, followed by photosan extravagant table set with dishes that looked like they belonged in a fivestar restaurant. Caviar. Truffles. Something wrapped in gold leaf, because of

course.

Alright, hero. Dinner’s on me tonight. Got the whole thing arranged. Consider it a welcomebackfrom- thehospitalslashyou’reanidiotfortakingabullet celebration.”

Eugene scrolled through the photos. It was impressive. Landon never did anything halfway.

But compared to what was happening in that kitchen right now? Nothing else came close.

He typed back quickly. Can’t. Already have plans. Rain check.

The response was immediate. A flood of question marks.

Question mark.

Question mark.

Then another barrage, like Landon’s brain had shortcircuited.

This tasting menu cost me six figures. SIX. I had the chef fly in ingredients from three different continents. What plans? Where? Who’s catering? TELL ME.

More emojis followed. Shocked faces. Exploding heads. Landon was probably losing his mind on the other

end.

Eugene smiled and typed one last message.

Must be nice being single and having nothing better to do.”

He sent it, then quickly texted Bruce with a few instructions before powering off his phone entirely Whatever time he had left tonight, he wasn’t sharing it with anyone. Not his parents. Not his best fr

No one.

He’d just set the phone down when a loud crash came from the kitchen. Something hit the floor and shattered.

Eugene was on his feet immediately, heading for the door.

Inside, Chloe stood in the middle of what looked like a small disaster zone. She had her phone in one hand, a spatula in the other, and was staring at a pan on the stove where the oil had started smoking.

UhohShe froze, clearly flustered. She reached to turn off the burner, realized both hands were full, quickly set the phone down, and finally killed the heat.

The oil was ruined now. Too hot. She frowned at the pan, debating whether to wash it and start over.

Need help?

Her shoulders tensed at the sound of his voice. She turned to find Eugene leaning against the doorframe, taking in the scene with an expression she couldn’t quite read.

She wanted to block his view. Too late for that.

Okay, soShe gestured vaguely at the chaos around her. First time trying this. It’sgoing about as well as you’d expect.

Eugene glanced around the kitchen. What had once been pristine ingredients were now scattered across the counter in various states of disrepair. His eyes landed on a small smudge near the corner of Chloe’s eye. The corner of his mouth twitched. You’re doing fine,” he said. First time my mom cooked for my dad, she set off the smoke alarm and burned a hole in the cabinet.

Chloe blinked, then laughed despite herself.

So she wasn’t the only one.

Back in her days at Silverash, she’d never had time for this. When you’re busy surviving, you don’t exactly get cozy afternoons learning family recipes. Cooking was something other people did. Normal people.

Maybe we should just eat something else, she said, glancing toward the fridge. She walked over and pulled it open. Inside, it was stocked like a small grocery store. Imported cheeses. Fresh produce. Cuts of meat that probably cost more than most people’s weekly groceries. Some things she couldn’t even name.

She stared at it all, suddenly overwhelmed.

What was she supposed to make? She’d watched the videos. They made it look so simple. But standing here now, ingredients staring back at her like a silent challenge, she realized she’d underestimated the whole thing.

This was harder than missions. Harder than facing down the organization. At least those she understood.

A voice spoke close to her car. Don’t overthink it.She hadn’t heard him move. Let’s just do something simple, Eugene said. Boil some pasta. Fry an egg. That’s it.”

He was right behind her now, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him at her back. His breath brushed against her neck, and she felt a shiver run down her spine.

Chloe’s cheeks warmed. This was not how she’d pictured this going.

She glanced sideways at the eggs on the shelf. Pasta and an egg. She could handle that. Back when Zachary was too busy with work, she’d made that for Robert plenty of times when she watched him.
