Eugene raised an eyebrow. The fact that he’d landed someone special was pretty obvious by now-he didn’t need Landon pointing it out.

“That kid of yours? Genius level. His hacking potential? I’m honestly in awe.” Landon dropped his voice so only Eugene could hear. “You know how someone’s been poking around your system lately? Well… I showed him the backend LAN access point.”

Eugene’s expression shifted. That was classified information. It held everything on Eric-even his personal account passwords were stored there.

Landon had actually handed that over.

Before Eugene could respond, Landon got serious. “You won’t believe this. I was just complaining about a security flaw in the LAN, saying how dangerous it’d be if someone cracked it. And the kid? He said he already knew about it. Said he could handle the whole security setup. Promised me—actually promised—that nobody would get through. And if they did, he’d eat his keyboard.”

Eugene raised an eyebrow and glanced over at the little guy currently being smothered with affection by his grandparents.

Was this kid really that good? What had he missed?

“He actually pulled it off?” Eugene’s gaze sharpened on Landon.

“Pulled it off? He exceeded every expectation. Like I said, I gave him direct access and told him to lock it down. Within minutes, he’d built an entirely new security firewall for your LAN. Solid as a vault.” Landon leaned in, lowering his voice even more. “I’ve had the entire cybersecurity team at Rosewood Industries trying to breach it ever since. Not one of them has found a single crack.”

Eugene just stared at him.

“Your boy is something else. Your own flesh and blood probably couldn’t match that, right?” Landon smirked. “Seriously, the kid’s incredible. Chloe really outdid herself-she gave birth to a prodigy. But honestly, with how amazing she is, of course her kid would be brilliant. I mean, she was the woman I once had my eye on.”

Eugene shot him a look. “Don’t even go there. Even if I hadn’t made a move, it still wouldn’t have been your turn. Chloe’s taste isn’t that bad-she wouldn’t have given you a second glance.”

Landon let out an awkward chuckle.

“Don’t be so sure. If you’re gonna put it like that, maybe I should start pursuing her. You haven’t

“You think you’re even in the running?” Eugene’s eyebrow arched higher. “We should give you an award for sheer audacity. New Year’s coming up-you can prepare a speech for the company party. Stand up there and announce your courage to everyone.”

Landon forced a dry laugh. “Boss, is that supposed to be a compliment or an insult? I know my limits.”

His eyes drifted to the marks visible above Eugene’s collar, and he burst out laughing.

“I’m just here for the entertainment.”

Eugene smiled faintly, then turned to his parents and Robert. “Let’s sit down. We’ll eat once Chloe gets here.”

Robert nodded and took Rhea’s hand, leading her toward the table.

Then Eugene’s phone rang.

The sudden sound cut through the room. Everyone turned. Rhea immediately asked, “Is that Chloe?”

Eugene glanced at the screen, and his expression shifted. It wasn’t Chloe’s number. It was a landline—and some key numbers showed the caller’s origin before he even picked up.

Central Hospital.

“Eugene, who is it?” Rhea’s gaze was fixed on his face.

He stared at the number. He didn’t speak, but something pricked at his chest. A strange feeling, like a needle lightly pressing.

Before the call could go to voicemail, he answered.

“Hello?”

“Are you a family member of Chloe Lewis?” A woman’s voice came through, urgent and strained.

The moment he heard Chloe’s name, his chest tightened. No hesitation. “Yes. What happened?” His voice sharpened, startling everyone nearby.

“Ms. Lewis has been in a serious car accident. The vehicle is severely damaged, and her injuries are critical. She’s in emergency surgery right now. We need a family member to come to the hospital immediately. We-”

Rhea and Hogan stood frozen, their faces grim. The voice on the phone hadn’t been loud, but they’d caught the key words. Car accident. Critical. Hospital.

“What do we do?” Rhea grabbed Hogan’s hand, panic creeping into her voice. “That girl-she was in an accident? How does something like this happen out of nowhere?”

Robert’s face shifted. Disbelief flickered in his eyes. His mom? In a car accident? She was too strong for that. Too capable.

Hogan’s expression darkened. He looked at his wife, then at his grandson, then turned to Landon. “Go get the car. Now. We need to get to that hospital. Chloe… and Eugene… neither of them can get hurt.”
