The moment Eugene turned around, Rhea pulled away from Hogan like she’d been burned. “I’m just gonna go see how our son’s call is going,” she said quickly, and hurried after Eugene, completely ignoring what Hogan had just said.

Hogan glared in her direction, making a mental note-he was definitely going to find a chance to make this woman regret calling him “old man”. Just wait. She’d see.

Then he noticed Eugene’s expression. It wasn’t good. Hogan wiped any trace of amusement off his face and walked over.

“What’s wrong?”

Eugene looked up. “Chloe’s phone is off.”

“Off?” Hogan’s eyebrows went up. “Why would it be off all of a sudden?”

“It’s off,” Rhea confirmed, leaning in. “I heard it too-completely switched off.”

They all exchanged confused looks. They’d made plans. Everyone agreed on dinner. Why would she just turn her phone off?

“Try again,” Hogan suggested, his expression serious now. “Maybe her battery died and she’s charging it.”

Eugene dialed again, right in front of them. Still off.

Rhea grabbed Hogan’s hand nervously. “You don’t think… you don’t think she got cold feet? Decided she didn’t want to do this after all?” She bit her lip. “I mean, this dinner is basically meeting the parents. What if she panicked and bailed?”

Something flickered across Eugene’s face.

Had Chloe changed her mind?

No. He couldn’t believe that. She wasn’t the type to stand someone up. To back out.

If she agreed to something, she followed through.

Unless… something happened.

A knot formed in his chest. Something felt wrong.

Rhea’s worry was escalating. “What if she just doesn’t want to meet us? What if she ran off and hid? Her phone’s unreachable-why now, of all times?”

“Stop.” Hogan cut her off. “I know that girl’s character. She’s not like that. If she had doubts, she wouldn’t have chosen our son in the first place.” He shot a pointed look at Eugene. “Once she made that choice, I believe she’s not letting go. That woman’s got more spine than you ever did.”

Rhea opened her mouth to argue, but then they heard footsteps. She pushed past Hogan and looked toward the door. Landon walked in, holding Robert’s hand.

Landon was in a sharp black suit, and little Robert was dressed in a miniature version of his own-impossibly cute. The kid was striking, so much that even Landon, who usually thought pretty highly of his own style, seemed to fade into the background next to him.

“Oh my God, look at my grandson.” Rhea watched Robert approach, something tugging at her memory. She tugged Hogan’s sleeve. “Old man, doesn’t he remind you of Eugene at that family party years ago? The one in the little tuxedo?”

Hogan stared at Robert, his eyes thoughtful. That party… it had to be over twenty years ago.

He couldn’t really remember what Eugene looked like back then.

But there were photos somewhere. Probably at the old house. They hadn’t been back in years- ever since Eugene took over, he and Rhea had been traveling nonstop. Who knew what was still sitting in that house?

“Hogan, Rhea. Long time.” Landon walked up with a grin, snapping Hogan out of his thoughts.

“You made it.” Rhea smiled back, then crouched slightly to look at Robert. “Hey there, sweetheart. Do you remember me?”

“Hello, Grandma. Hello, Grandpa.” Robert’s voice was polite, measured. Then he turned to Eugene. “Mr. Rosewood… hello.”

Eugene looked at the boy-so well-behaved, so composed. Hearing “Mr. Rosewood” land on him… he realized he wanted the kid to call him something else. Dad.

The fact that this boy wasn’t Arthur’s only made him more certain. He had every right to step up. Every right to be that for him.

“Please, sit down.” Eugene gestured to the table. He glanced at Landon. “Thanks for picking him up.”

“Are you kidding? It was an honor.” Landon grinned. “I just added him on WhatsApp, by the way. I’ve got questions for him later.”

“Remember to pay the consultation fee,” Robert said flatly.

Landon straightened up, completely serious. “Done. Worth every penny. I’m basically hiring a top-tier consultant-the fee’s gotta be good.” He pulled out his phone, found Robert’s contact, and transferred a million dollars via Venmo right there.

“That’s your allowance, kid. The rest we’ll do through the company, proper contract and everything. Gotta keep the books clean.” He pocketed his phone. “That was just your uncle giving you some spending money. Thanks, little man.”

“Thanks.” Robert didn’t hesitate. The money was his now.

Eugene watched the two of them-one grown, one not-both wearing identical shrewd, calculating expressions. He rolled his eyes and looked away.

Landon leaned in close, lowering his voice. “Dude. You hit the jackpot with this one.”
