Hogan had handled his share of fine watches over the years, but the one Chloe had picked out for him meant more than any of them. He barely glanced at it before setting it aside carefully, a knot tightening in his chest. If something really happened to that girl because of this accident, he didn’t know how any of them would deal with it.
Robert hadn’t let go of Eugene’s hand. His small fingers were wrapped tight around Eugene’s, holding on like it was the only thing keeping him grounded. His mom was in that operating room, and right now, Eugene was all he had.
“Her phone’s smashed, Landon said quietly, holding up what was left of it. The screen was shattered, the casing bent. Even the SIM card had fallen out somewhere. “No way to salvage it.”
That explained why the calls hadn’t gone through. The phone was destroyed–of course it wouldn’t ring.
Another half hour crawled by before the light above the operating room finally clicked off. Everyone was on their feet before the doors even opened.
The doctor stepped out, mask in hand. Eugene moved fast, blocking his path before he could get two
steps.
“Doctor. How is she?”
“How’s our girl?” Rhea was right behind him, Hogan at her side. Their voices overlapped, urgent and anxious.
The doctor held up a hand, signaling them to settle down. He pulled off his surgical cap and met their eyes. “She’s in serious condition, but you got her here in time. Her life’s not in danger. That said, she sustained a head injury and multiple contusions across her body. Whether there are long–term effects- that’s something we won’t know until she regains consciousness.”
“When will she wake up?” Rhea’s voice cracked.
“That depends on her. Could be soon. Could be hours. Could be days. Everyone’s different. Given the severity of the crash, we’re lucky she made it through at all.” The doctor gave a short nod and walked off.
Eugene stood frozen, the words settling into his bones like stones.
She was alive. But she was hurt. Badly hurt. And there was no telling what the aftermath would look like.
None of it sat right with him. None of it.
He’d only just won her heart. They hadn’t even had a real chance to be happy yet. How the hell did this happen?
He didn’t want to believe it. But the truth was right in front of him.
Some kind of sick joke from the universe,
His fist slammed into the wall before he could stop it. The sound echoed through the corridor, and when he pulled his hand back, there was a dent in the plaster and blood on his knuckles.

Rhea flinched, then steadied herself. She pulled Robert into her arms and sat down with him on one of the benches lining the hall.
“Hey,” she murmured, brushing his hair back. “Your mom’s tough. She’s not going anywhere, okay?”
Robert nodded, but his eyes never left the operating room doors.
Another half hour passed before the doors finally swung open and Chloe’s bed was wheeled out.
Eugene’s chest seized the second he saw her.
Most of her face was wrapped in bandages. The doctor had warned them–head injury, facial lacerations, all treated but with no guarantees about recovery.
He’d tried to prepare himself. But seeing her like this was different. It hit different.
Her face–that face he knew so well, the one that could go from fierce to soft in a heartbeat–was almost entirely hidden beneath white gauze. Only one side was visible, pale and still. She was unconscious. Completely out. And all they could do now was wait.
The nurses settled her into the room, checked the monitors, adjusted the IV, and left with a few quiet instructions. The door clicked shut behind them.
Eugene stood by the bed and didn’t move. He didn’t say a word. But the weight of his presence filled the room, made it feel smaller than it was.
“Bruce.” His voice was low, controlled. “Find out what happened.”
Chloe didn’t crash for no reason. She was too good behind the wheel. And the car–his cars didn’t have problems. Ever.
So what the hell went wrong?
Bruce gave a short nod and slipped out without a sound.
The tension in the room didn’t let up. Hogan and Rhea sat off to the side, their faces drawn. Neither of them spoke. The woman on that bed was family now, whether the papers said so or not. And family in trouble meant worry that sat heavy in the chest.
They’d been so looking forward to that dinner. Finally, all of them together, like things were falling into place.
If only they hadn’t pushed for it. If only Chloe hadn’t insisted on going out to get those last–minute things. Rhea’s stomach twisted with guilt she couldn’t shake,
Eugene had done his best to keep the news quiet, but the Myers family had ears everywhere, It didn’t take long for word to reach them. Arthur showed up at the hospital before anyone else,
