Chapter 533 Visitors at the Bedside
“Chloe!”
9 Finished
Arthur stopped at the foot of the bed, staring at the figure lying motionless beneath the thin hospital sheet. For a moment, he couldn’t find the words.
He’d just gotten off work and walked into an empty house, that familiar hollow feeling settling in his chest. He’d opened a bottle of whiskey, barely had time to pour a glass, when Donald called–Chloe had been in a crash. A bad one. She was alive, but it was serious.
He didn’t think twice. He was in the car before he even hung up.
Now he stood here, looking at her like this, and his throat tightened.
“Chloe.” His voice came out rougher than he meant it to. “Come on. Wake up. The company landed that international deal today–the one we’ve been chasing for months. I’ve been killing myself over this. You owe me some recognition here. At least tell me I did okay.”
He tried to smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “So wake up already. Please.”
Arthur’s emotion didn’t move Eugene. Not one bit. Crying at her bedside wasn’t going to help her wake up. If Eugene hadn’t been too drained to deal with it, he would’ve tossed Arthur out of the room and told him to take his guilt somewhere else.
Arthur stood there a while longer, waiting for a response that wasn’t coming. Eventually, he turned and looked at Eugene.
He knew Eugene and Chloe were close, so it didn’t surprise him to see Eugene here. But the older couple sitting off to the side–that threw him. Who were they? Then Robert spoke, calling them Grandma and Grandpa, and it clicked.
Eugene’s parents. Robert was already calling them that.
So that meant Chloe and Eugene were together.
But even if they were together, wasn’t it too soon for Robert to be calling them Grandma and Grandpa?
Those titles should’ve belonged to his own parents. His father was gone, but his mother… Arthur’s mind drifted to Madilyn, to the role she should’ve filled, and the familiar guilt crept back in. He’d let Robert down. He’d let Chloe down.
And now Chloe was lying in a hospital bed, and all he could do was stand here like a stranger.
“Mr. Rosewood.” Arthur kept his voice steady, though it took effort, “Do you know what happened? How she crashed?”
Eugene didn’t look away from Chloe. “A dog ran into the road. She swerved to avoid it and lost control. Hit the guardrail–flipped it. Car’s totaled.”
He recited it flatly, the way Bruce had laid it out for him.

They’d pulled the surveillance footage, reviewed the scene reports from the police. Nothing suspicious. No foul play. Just a dog darting out at the wrong moment and a split–second decision to avoid it. If she hadn’t swerved, she wouldn’t have crashed.
But she did swerve.
If there’d been something else–anything else–they could’ve dug deeper. But there wasn’t. Even the police had closed the file. Accidental collision. Case closed.
Arthur absorbed that in silence. He turned back to Chloe, his voice dropping to something barely audible. “Chloe… if I could trade places with you, I would.”
But she didn’t answer. She couldn’t.
Charles didn’t show up until late.
No matter how tight Eugene tried to keep things, Charles found out anyway. He’d been getting ready for bed when something started gnawing at him. An unease he couldn’t shake. A feeling like if he closed his eyes, he’d miss something important. He’d pressed Greg–was. everything handled? Had anything been overlooked?
Greg had assured him everything was fine.
But Charles couldn’t let it go. He’d called Arthur. No answer. Called again. Nothing. Frustrated, he’d tried Donald, and that was when he found out–both of them were at the hospital. Chloe had been in an accident.
It didn’t matter that it was past midnight. Charles had Greg get the car.
He arrived in his wheelchair, took one look at Chloe lying there unconscious, and his face went red with fury.
“Who did this?” His voice cut through the quiet of the room. “Who the hell hurt Chloe?“.
