Oralia and Melinda both turned to look at Eugene. He was the one calling the shots now. In their minds, there was no question–he was family.
“Okay,” Eugene said simply. “Let’s go home.”
That was it. Just those few words. But to everyone listening, they carried weight. They meant something.
“God, that’s sweet.”
“Seriously.”
Oralia and Melinda exchanged a look, their approval of this man solidifying into something permanent. Their girl had finally found her person. The only question now was how long until they got to see a wedding.
Discharge paperwork finished, Eugene drove Chloe back to the villa himself. Oralia and Melinda followed in another car. Robert came too.
They all ended up at Riverville Prime Residence.
Chloe still needed rest and monitoring, so she’d be staying at Eugene’s place for now. He’d arranged for private medical team to be on standby around the clock.
Eugene pushed open the bedroom door. Chloe was standing in front of the mirror and startled at his reflection.
“Don’t–don’t look.”
He stopped in the doorway. Inside, her robe had fallen open slightly. The marks from the accident were still visible on her skin–fading but there, pale lines under the soft light.
She pulled the fabric closed quickly, her movements hurried, nervous. She wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“I…” She took a step back, gaze fixed somewhere past his shoulder. “I know I look… scary right now.”

Eugene walked into the room. Left the door open behind him. He came to stand in front of her, close but not crowding, and reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. There was a small scar there, just below the curve. A few more days of care and it would barely show. With the right treatment, none of these marks would last.
“Doesn’t matter what you look like,” he said quietly. Firmly. Like he was saying it for himself as much as for her. “I love you. That’s not gonna change.”
Chloe looked at him. Held his gaze. After a long moment, she spoke, “Eugene… even like this? Even with everything that’s happened? You still love me?”
“Yes.”
“But I can’t remember. I can’t remember so much of what we had.”

“Then we’ll remember it again. Together.” He held her eyes, his voice low and steady. “You only need to remember one thing. Just one. I love you. Only you. No one else. Ever.”
Chloe looked at him–this proud, beautiful man standing in front of her, saying words that sounded like a vow–and smiled. She lifted a hand toward him. “Eugene? Can I… Can I hug you?”
He nodded. Stepped forward. Wrapped his arms around her carefully, gently, like she was something precious that might break.
She held on to him, breathing him in, trying to memorize the shape of him, the warmth. She started to lean closer-
He let go first.
“You should rest.” His voice was soft. “If you need anything, the medical team’s downstairs. I have to step. out–my parents need me for something. I’ll be back.”
He turned to go.
“Eugene.”
He stopped. Looked back.
She was watching him, her expression softer now. A small smile curved her lips. “Eugene. Let’s get married.”
His face shifted. The calm composure cracked, just slightly, and then he smiled. A real smile. Warm.
“Okay.” Just like that. No hesitation. No second thought.
“I don’t remember everything,” she said, still smiling. “But I remember enough to know I chose you. And that’s all that matters.”
“Yeah.” His voice was quiet, certain. “I’ll handle everything.”
He was gone. He’d given his word. It would only be a matter of time before Eugene was completely hers.
Chloe–or rather, Jennifer, who wore her face like a mask–didn’t let her triumphant smirk/show until he was gone, the door shut, and she was finally alone.
Dropping all pretense, pure satisfaction and triumph spread across her features.
