Chapter 542 Wedding Date Set
45 Pearls
Charles stayed for a quiet meal with Chloe and Eugene, clearly wanting to linger longer, just to sit and talk with her. But Blaine ended up calling Eugene directly, practically ordering him to get Charles to the hospital. Eugene had no choice but to have Bruce drive him there.
Chloe stood at the door, watching the car pull away, and said quietly, “Grandpa was really happy. About us getting married.”
“Yeah,” Eugene answered softly from beside her.
Chloe turned, glancing over at Robert nearby. She smiled. “Eugene, I can’t wait for the wedding.”
“Me neither,” Eugene said, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly.
“Robert, when Mommy gets married, will you be my ring bearer?” She looked over at Robert, who was curled up on the sofa, eyes glued to his tablet.
At that, Robert raised an eyebrow. “Ring bearer? That’s, like, a job for little kids. I think you should ask Zachary,”
“You little monster,” Chloe said, her smile widening.
“I’ll handle all the planning myself. You just rest at home. The tailor’s stopping by later to take your
measurements.”
“Okay. Just don’t run yourself ragged. I don’t need anything fancy,” she said gently, reaching out to smooth his tie.
“I’m heading out,” Eugene said simply, then turned to leave.
Robert suddenly slid off the couch, tablet still in hand. “Mommy, I want to go with Eugene. Grandma said she wants to pick out jewelry for you. I kind of want to see.”
Chloe’s expression didn’t change. “Fine. Just don’t be a handful.”
“Got it.” Robert grinned, scrambled over the back of the sofa, and hurried to Eugene’s side, falling into step beside him.
Chloe stayed where she was, watching the two of them walk off–one tall, one small. A small smile played at the corner of her mouth.
Perfect. Both of them, completely fooled.
Now all she had to do was wait. A few more days, and that woman would be drowning in despair.
Eugene and Robert walked out of the house. Before Eugene could even get in the car, Robert had already climbed into the passenger seat and buckled himself in.
Looked like the kid was sticking to him like glue.

Eugene slid into the driver’s seat and glanced over at the little guy next to him. “Jewelry shopping with Grandma? That’s a pretty weak excuse, kid. What are you really up to?”
Robert tilted his head at the question. He didn’t explain–just smiled.
“Well… I guess the guy my mom picked isn’t completely useless after all.”
At that, Eugene’s gaze sharpened. “Kid, lying’s not a good look on you.”
Robert pouted and turned to stare out the window. “I just didn’t want to stay in that house with her.”
Her.
Eugene paused, studying Robert for a long moment. Then, calmly, he said, “You noticed it too?”
Robert turned back at that, meeting Eugene’s eyes. The two of them–one grown, one not–stared at each other until Robert finally spoke.
“At first, I was just confused. The way ‘Mom‘ looked at me… There was something off. Like she didn’t really want to be near me. Robert shrugged. “But after we brought her back to Riverville Prime Residence, every time I saw the way she looked at you, I knew. Something was wrong.
“When she said she wanted to marry you, and you didn’t even flinch, I thought—if you couldn’t figure it out, maybe you weren’t the guy for the job.” Robert pouted again. “The man my mom chose couldn’t be that dumb. Not being able to tell real from fake. But hearing you now, I’m guessing you’re just playing along? Letting her think she’s got one over on you?”
“Kid, that’s not exactly how that expression works,” Eugene corrected, but his tone shifted. “But you’re not wrong. I am playing along.”
He kept his eyes on the road, a cold glint surfacing. “Someone swapped her out right under my nose. I want to know who’s behind it.”
“Anyone who messes with my mom answers to me first.” Robert’s expression hardened. Unlike Eugene’s cool calculation, the anger on Robert’s face was plain as day.
Eugene chuckled at that. “Not bad. You’ve got guts. I’m honored to be your future stepdad.” He kept one hand on the wheel and reached over with the other, ruffling Robert’s hair.
