She told him she loved him. Even if she’d lost so much, even if she couldn’t remember, she still believed— firmly–that she loved the man standing in front of her.
His answer was simpler.
“You only need to remember one thing. Just one. I love you. Only you. No one else. Ever.”
On the screen, Eugene held someone in his arms and answered with quiet sincerity. The camera caught every word, perfectly framed on his face. Chloe listened.
This was Eugene, laying it all out. One person. Irreplaceable.
God, what a pure kind of love. Too bad the woman in his arms right then wasn’t the one his heart actually belonged to.
Chloe watched the video, her face unreadable. She dragged the progress bar back and played that part again.
“You only need to remember one thing. Just one. I love you. Only you. No one else. Ever.”

it run a few times, the same words looping over and over. Vincent watched her listen so carefully, elegantly slid a glass of red wine toward her.
“Try this. It’s a forty–year–old vintage–deep, complex. One sip’ll run you about what most people make in a year.” He smiled faintly. “Looks like your guy isn’t as solid as you thought. He’s already moving forward with wedding plans. I’d say our bet’s just about settled.”
The video cut off abruptly as Chloe hit pause.
“Settled?” She let out a quiet laugh. “Is the head of Silverash really playing dirty now?”
Vincent’s expression shifted slightly at that.

Vincent stayed seated, posture easy, unbothered. He glanced at the frozen image on the screen–Eugene holding “Chloe” gently in his arms.
Her own man, holding another woman. And it didn’t seem to touch her at all.

The news hit fast: Eugene and Chloe were engaged.
The moment Charles heard, he headed straight for Riverville Prime Residence.
Charles sat in his wheelchair, looking worse than he had a few days ago. His cough was worse, his breath came shorter. He was supposed to be at the hospital for tests, but the second he’d heard about the wedding, he’d put it off and come straight here.
“Chloe, I heard you’re getting married!” His voice shook with excitement. “That’s wonderful news! To see you walk down the aisle–it makes an old man so happy.”
He was lit up from the inside, all his weariness seeming to lift.
Chloe took his hand gently and said softly, “Grandpa, I’m happy too. It’s really good. All of it.”
“Good, good–that’s just wonderful.” He looked at the genuine smile on her face, and his own heart
