Chapter 552 Futile Efforts
Finished
“The doctor administered an allergy shot and ran a full checkup. He’s doing much better now,” Eugene answered plainly.
“Robert, that boy… How did he develop an allergy all of a sudden? I’ll be sure to watch out more carefully from now on,” Jennifer said, her voice laced with concern. After a brief pause, she added, “When are you coming home? It’s already the middle of the night.”
As she spoke, Eugene glanced toward Robert. Meeting Robert’s disapproving look, Eugene replied in an even tone, “The doctor recommended he stay under observation overnight. I’m going to stay here with him. You should get some rest and take care of yourself.”
The line went quiet. In that sudden silence, Jennifer’s irritation was almost tangible–the kind that came from not hearing what she wanted to hear.
Eugene had no patience to keep talking. Before Jennifer could say another word, he quickly wrapped up the call, making an excuse about the doctor coming in to check on Robert.
Robert watched Eugene hang up without hesitation and remarked, “You’re pretty cold with her. If Jennifer figures out you’ve seen right through her, how’s the rest of this little performance supposed to go on?”
erformance?” Eugene raised a brow. “She’s not worth the effort.”
Robert let out a low chuckle. Eugene’s anger was tightly held in check, but Robert could feel it simmering beneath the surface. Still, if it were him in that situation, he’d probably have lost his cool even sooner. When someone came right to your door and tried to pull something, not pushing back just wasn’t in his
nature.
Whoever crossed Eugene would have to face what came next–no exceptions.

Back at Riverville Prime Residence, Jennifer stared at the silent phone in her hand, frustration boiling inside her.
That little brat really knew how to pick his moment, wrecking everything she’d planned. Now Eugene’s attention was completely tied up with the kid. If he didn’t come home tonight, her plans would be set back yet again.
The people she was working with were already pushing her for results. She couldn’t afford to waste any more time playing games.
She needed to get this man under her control, and fast. If things didn’t move along smoothly, she’d have to resort to other methods.
