Eugene watched the numbers shift, not fully grasping how Robert had pulled it off, but the instant the system was breached, he understood–the kid had hacked directly into the God’s Eye. Anywhere under that’satellite’s reach, if Chloe appeared, they’d know.

Unless the other side kept her completely hidden, never letting her step into public view again… in which case, it was only a matter of time before they found her.

“My team is sweeping every possible location,” Eugene added firmly. “Any lead comes in, they’ll report right away. Whatever it takes.”

Robert glanced at the clock. By now, Eugene–the supposed groom–should’ve been getting ready, but here he was, still hovering around.

“Shouldn’t the groom be prepping for the big day?” Robert teased, raising a brow. “Or is the wedding not happening after all?”

Eugene’s expression sobered. He reached over and lightly tapped Robert’s forehead. “Get your facts straight, kid. Chloe and I are together. We may not be married yet, but you calling me Dad… that’s already a done deal.”

Robert took a half–step back, rubbing his forehead and mumbling under his breath. He stared at the man in front of him. This was the guy he was supposed to call Dad.

Ugh.

It wasn’t that he couldn’t say it–it just felt weird, too familiar somehow.

“Jennifer’s going to realize she’s been made soon,” Robert said, lowering his voice into something more serious. “Once she does, the other side will know too. We need to tighten surveillance on her. She’ll try to make contact, and if we tail her close enough, we might even track them straight to their doorstep.

“Don’t worry,” Bruce said as he walked into the room, handing a file to Eugene. “We’ve already placed people inside and even left Jennifer an easy way out–makes her more likely to run. The moment she reaches out, we’ll trace it.” He paused. “Message from Mr. Voss, sir. He’s turned up some leads on Ms. Lewis.”

Eugene took the folder and pulled out the contents.

Inside were records from way back–eight years ago.

There was a photo from an underground trading scene in Eldermar. Among a group of figures dressed in black was the silhouette of a woman–just her back turned, but her profile and build were clearly recognizable.

One look was all it took. Eugene knew it was Chloe from eight years earlier.

She was thinner back then, her face still soft with youth.

“Mr. Voss said the intel still needs verification,” Bruce added quietly. “He’s looking into it personally, but since he knew you were worried, he forwarded everything right away.”

Eugene stared at the figure in the photo. This was clearly some kind of organized operation. Just from the way, these people carried themselves, he could tell they were trained, disciplined, skilled.

Skilled… It reminded him of Chloe’s own abilities–how exceptional she was, even better than him at times.
