Chapter 555 All Means Necessary

Finis

Was she really planning to face danger all by herselfjust cutting everyone off? Leaving him behind, ar Robert too?

This womannever listened.

Once he found her, he was going to make sure she got a good, long lecture.

Keep digging. Use whatever you needpeople, money, contacts. Like I said, nothing’s off the table. I do care what it takes,Eugene said, his voice low and steady. The order left no room for debate.

If they were already this deep in, they might as well go all the way.

Robert was still leaning over the documents, eyes fixed on the photos. He couldn’t shake the feeling he’d seen this kind of organization before.

It was on the tip of his tonguesomething from way back, when his mom was still around. He’d caught her once, looking through files that seemed related.

Some kind of group, or maybe a networkbut what was it called?

He made an excuse to take a break and slipped into the lounge. Laptop open, he started combing throug old folders, hoping something might jog his memory.

The moment the system booted up, a notification popped up. Robert’s eyes went wide.

No way.

The firewall he’d been trying to crack for monthsit was finally open. Buried data, wiped from the servei years ago, was now right in front of him.

Back when his mom and Arthur split up, Robert had made it his mission to find out who his real father

was.

He needed to know: who was the guy from that night, all those years ago? Even with most trails gone cold, he’d kept hacking away, trying to restore what was erased.

Everyone who entered or left the hotel that night would’ve been caught on security cameras. Pinpoint those people, and he could shrink the pool of potential fathers from billionsdown to a few hundred.

Then it’d just be a matter of checking them one by one.

Just you wait, old man. Better still be breathing when I come knocking. If not, I’ll dig up your grave myself.

Robert scanned the unpacked files. Over a thousand photos. Not baddown from billions to just over a thousand. Pretty damn good, actually.

He clicked open the first image. A bald head, heavyset, flushed face.

Ugh. Talk about a visual assault. He scrolled quickly, needing something easier on the eyes.

A few photos down, he paused. Arthur was in one of them.

Finished

So Arthur was at the hotel that nightsomething his grandpa had probably arranged. What a joke that he and Robert’s mom ended up with nothing between them.

Still, out of the first hundred or so pictures, Arthur was honestly the least hard to look at. If Robert didn’t know better, he might’ve wondered

But no. Next.

Another batch of photos in, Robert’s stomach growled. He thought about asking Bruce to grab him a snack from the kitchen.

He started to get up, then froze.

His eyes snapped back to the screen.

The photo he’d just passeda woman, not his target, butthe shot right before it.

He scrolled back.

There, caught in a side profile, clear as day: a tall frame, that familiar posture, that jacket.

It was Bruce.

Well, well. Look what we have here.

Robert kept staring at the pictures. He was one hundred percent sure that the guy showing up in the shots over and over again was Bruce.

Bruce had walked into the hotel lobby, checked himself into a room, and picked up his key card from the front desk.

Man, what is Bruce even doing here?

It was pretty surprising to see him show up on camera like this.

Robert took another quick look at the photos and shrugged his shoulders. A little voice in his head wondered. Could Bruce be a suspect too? One of the suspects in his dad’s investigation?

But this was no time to be thinking up theories like that. The top priority right now was to find his mom as fast as he could. He could dig into all the other stuff later when he had more time.

He shut the laptop, though Bruce’s photo still lingered behind his eyes. Then he stood and walked out.

At Riverville Prime Residence, Jennifer had been up early, waiting for the wedding planners to arrive.

But ten o’clock came and went, and no one showed.
