Finally, Hogan promised that if any fighting needed doing, he–as the man of the house–would handle it for her. That finally softened Rhea’s expression.
“Eugene,” she said, taking his hand carnestly, “whatever it takes, we have to bring Chloe home. No matter who’s behind this–now that they’ve come after us, we can’t let her down. We’re family. Families stick together. Whatever comes, we face it.”
Eugene understood. His parents had accepted Chloe completely. Now, against some unseen enemy, they stood with him–no hesitation.
Chloe, where are you?
He was searching everywhere.
Couldn’t she give him just one clue? Anything at all.
Before the meal ended, Bruce called.
Seeing his name, Eugene put the phone on speaker so everyone could hear.
‘Go ahead.”
‘Mr. Rosewood… we lost Jennifer.”
Eugene’s expression turned grim. All those trained men–and they’d lost her.
If this got out, nobody would believe it.
‘How did you lose her? We had people everywhere!” Hogan’s face tightened. “All those men, and one woman slips away? Something’s off.”
‘Mr. Rosewood, someone picked Jennifer up. The other side seemed to know we were tracking them the whole time. The trail went completely cold. We’ve checked everything–there’s no trace left.” Bruce’s voice was low, tense. “Mr. Rosewood… what do you want us to do now?”
Eugene stayed composed. His voice was calm but firm. “Keep one team on it to continue the search. Pull everyone else back to their posts.”
“Understood.” With that, Bruce ended the call quickly.
Eugene sat at the table, face steady–but underneath, his fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, the pressure sharp enough to ache. Anyone looking close could tell he was holding back a storm.
