Chapter 564 Shadows of the Past
Landon stiffened the moment he heard it. Was this guy asking for a beating? Showing up to pick a fight with Eugene at a time like this? Did he have a death wish?
Some nobody–thinking he could challenge Eugene? They weren’t even playing in the same league.
Eugene shifted his gaze toward Arthur. Even seated, the look in his eyes shifted the energy in the entire room.
“What gives you the right to question me?” That one sentence left Arthur speechless.
Arthur chuckled softly. “Eugene, I thought you’d be different. Too bad you couldn’t protect her
either.
The words were clearly meant to provoke. The instant he finished speaking, Eugene’s expression shifted.
The room was spacious, yet the atmosphere suddenly grew thick and cold.
“Are you telling me what to do?” Eugene’s lips curved into a faint, humorless smile. “What makes you think you’re in any position to do that?”
Arthur stood there, completely outmatched. That one remark from Eugene almost broke his composure.
Watching Eugene’s calm, assertive demeanor, Arthur smiled thinly. “If anything happens to Chloe, I won’t let it slide.”
This time, Eugene didn’t take the bait. Instead, he let out a low laugh. “That’s none of your concern. What happens to her is my business. Whoever’s behind this–they won’t walk away clean.”
Arthur gave a quiet scoff, then walked straight over and dropped onto the couch across from Eugene.
“Eugene, I got some information from my grandfather… about what happened to Chloe back then.”
Hearing that, Eugene’s brows drew together slightly. He kept his eyes fixed on Arthur, waiting.
“Back then, Chloe was being hunted. She was badly hurt…”
As Arthur spoke, Eugene’s expression turned icy.

“My grandfather was ambushed around that same time and crossed paths with her. Chloe was already in rough shape, but she still saved him. That’s how I ended up with the chance to marry her” Arthur smiled bitterly. “I had the best woman in the world once. But I was too arrogant, too full of myself… and I blew it.”
“Get to the point,” Eugene said coldly.
The room went still after that, tension hanging in the air.
Arthur’s smile deepened as he looked at Eugene. He went on, “There were people behind the scenes targeting Chloe back then. They seemed… powerful. What exactly they were, Chloe never told my grandfather. What he does know is that she was trying to break away–cut all ties with them. The organization didn’t take it well. Back when she was lying low with the Myers family, it was because she didn’t want to be out in the open. Didn’t want them to find her.”
Eugene stayed quiet the whole time, taking in every detail Arthur laid out.
A shadow organization.
Worldwide, there weren’t many groups that could operate that quietly from the shadows. Only a handful.
Who was it?
Who would dare come at him so openly?
Jennifer changing her face and showing up right in front of him, pushing to marry him–the whole thing felt like a provocation. A test to see if he could tell whether the person in front of him was real or not.
“We put the word out directly, posted a bounty well over a hundred mil. The underground networks were buzzing, people ready to move… and still, we haven’t turned up anything useful. What kind of organization has that kind of reach–enough to scrub every trail clean?”
Landon stepped forward, laying it out plainly.
Both Eugene and Arthur looked up at the same time, their faces tight.
As Landon said, he’d already floated the bounty in the right circles, but it led nowhere. Out in the open, they’d mobilized everything they had and came up empty. Behind the scenes, the word had spread across every dark channel, and still… nothing.
If it was some kind of organization, there should’ve been a leak somewhere, somehow. Intel shouldn’t have been this dry.
The men fell silent, each running through the possibilities, wondering if something had been missed along the way. Where there was money, there were always people willing to talk. There
