Arthur lit a cigarette and took a slow drag. Once he finished, he pinched off the burning end with his fingers and turned away, heading off to gather more useful intel.

Chloe stood amid the carnage, still smiling at him. Then her legs gave out. He tried to rise, to pull her to safety, but as he moved, pools of dark blood seemed to seep up from the ground itself, spreading like a tide, swallowing them both.

He watched Chloe’s form disappear into that redness and cried out, voice ragged with panic.

“Kid-!”

He jolted upright in the hospital bed, breathing hard. It took him a moment to recognize the sterile room around him–the beige walls, the faint smell of antiseptic. Just a dream.

But the dream felt too vivid, too raw. Even now, awake, his heart hammered against his ribs.

In the real memory, all those years ago, after Chloe had taken down those men, she’d warned him to run. More would be coming soon, she’d said–and if he stayed, neither of them would make it out.

He’d been too stunned by what she’d done to speak. More people than this? What kind of trouble was she in?
