Hearing Chloe’s name, Charles went still. He hesitated, met Arthur’s gaze, and after a long pause asked, “Any news on your end?”

Arthur shook his head.

“Nothing from Eugene either?”

Another shake of the head. “He’s thrown everything he has into the search. No trace so far, but…”

“But what?” Charles pressed, his voice edged with impatience.

Arthur held his grandfather’s stare and said plainly, “Jennifer’s dead. If we’re reading this right, she outlived her usefulness–the other side took her out.”

He used the phrase took her out. Charles‘ expression turned grim.

He kept his eyes locked on Arthur, as if struggling to process the words. A long, heavy moment passed before Charles‘ hand tightened around the edge of the hospital bed, his knuckles turning pale.

“She got what was coming to her. All of this was her own doing. Dying like that was too easy- too quick.” There was no pity in Charles‘ voice, only a cold detachment. Then he shifted focus. “What worries me now is whether Chloe has been harmed.”

He couldn’t forget the image from years ago–Chloe, covered in blood, collapsing right in front of him. It was a scene that would stay with him for the rest of his life.

“You don’t have to tell me, Grandpa. I know we have to find Chloe, whatever it takes,” Arthur replied, his voice steady and resolute. He seemed more composed now.

“Mm.”

Charles gave Arthur a few more quiet instructions before finally agreeing to lie back against the pillows.
