Chapter 573 Murder in the Shadows

The voice sounded elderly, like a woman in her fifties or beyond, but something immediately felt off Charles. The figure’s build and the noticeably baggy clothes didn’t match the tone coming from her. 1 voice had a drawn–out, almost theatrical quality–and something about it rang familiar, as if he’d hear somewhere before.
“Come here,” Charles ordered.
The figure kept her head lowered and didn’t turn, instead taking several steps backward.
‘Mr. Myers, I still have chores to finish.” The aged voice came again. This time, if he listened closely, it sounded slightly different–a little less steady.
That confirmed Charles‘ suspicion. Something wasn’t right. Every staff member on the estate had beer carefully screened, and he knew the handful who worked here by sight. This person didn’t fit.
‘Turn around. Let me see your face.” Charles had already pulled up Eugene’s number but wasn’t in a hi o call. He set the phone down on the side table, focused entirely on figuring out who this really was.
After stepping back, the servant just stood there, frozen, not even reacting when he told her to look up
‘Are
you deaf? I’m talking to you.”
He spoke again, sharper this time. The servant stayed put, but she knew she couldn’t outright ignore direct order. Slowly, she lifted her head and looked toward him.
Charles stared, ready to dress her down–everyone employed here was trained to show respect; none would ever behave so carelessly toward the family. But when he saw the face under the old–woman disguise, his words caught in his throat.
Her face was made up to look like an elderly lady’s, but her neck and collarbone were smooth and unlin -clearly the aging was just makeup.
‘Who are you really?” Charles demanded, irritation clear in his tone.
I really thought no one would notice,” the “old woman” said, her voice now clear and much younger
Hearing that shift in tone, Charles was stunned all over again. This voice–he definitely remembered it.
That girl from the Lewis family… what was her name… not even officially recognized… Carolyn
“You’re Carolyn,” Charles said, recognition flashing in his eyes. Those eyes beneath the disguise–he wouldn’t mistake them.
“Heh. So you still remember me, Carolyn smirked, looking straight at him now, undisguised contempt in her gaze. “This place is as dull as ever, isn’t it
“You…” Charles stared at her smug expression, fury rising. Back then, that girl had been trouble–almost as scheming as Jennifer. After the Lewises cleaned house and dealt with Monique and her lover, Carolyn had just… vanished.

He’d assumed she’d run off to save her own skin, too scared to ever show her face again. Who would’ve thought she’d been hiding right here, on Myers Estate?
Judging by her getup, she must have been here a while.
“Chloe’s nothing but a cheap tramp, and yet you treat her like some kind of princess,” Carolyn said coldly. “You’re so biased, old man, it’s sickening. You won’t find her. A girl like that probably died out there years ago. Good riddance–the world’s better off without her.”
Carolyn’s eyes flicked almost imperceptibly toward the phone on the table–the phone that held the final piece of the puzzle.
And now, she knew.
Earlier, she’d crept close, hoping to overhear whatever Charles had dug up.
He’d been investigating just who Chloe’s mystery man from six years ago was, and now that he had the answer, she was dying to see it for herself.
And the moment she saw it, rage boiled up inside her.
